STRAIGHT LINE
STRAIGHT LINE
a straight line is a line that does not change in direction. Thus it has a
uniform slope

The general equation of a straight line is:

𝑨𝒙 + 𝑩𝒚 + 𝑪 = 𝟎

To solve a line, either two points or one

point and a slope must be known

CONIC SECTION
CONIC SECTION
Is a locus of a point (or path) which moves
so that its distance from a fixed point
(focus) is in constant ratio, e (eccentricity)
to its distance from a fixed straight line
(directrix)

The term “conic section” was due to the

fact that the section is formed by a plane
made to intersect a cone

Circle is produced when the cutting plane is parallel to the base of the cone
Ellipse is produced when the cutting plane is not parallel (or inclined) to the base
of the cone
Parabola is produced when the cutting plane is parallel to the element (or
generatrix) of the cone
Hyperbola is produced when the cutting plane is parallel to the axis of the cone.

CONIC SECTION: General Equation of Conics
𝑨𝒙𝟐 + 𝑩𝒙𝒚 + 𝑪𝒚𝟐 + 𝑫𝒙 + 𝑬𝒚 + 𝑭 = 𝟎
If 𝐵 ≠ 0, the axis of the conic is oblique with the coordinate system (i.e. not
parallel to X or Y axes). Thus if the axis is either parallel to X and Y axes, the
equation becomes

𝑨𝒙𝟐 + 𝑪𝒚𝟐 + 𝑫𝒙 + 𝑬𝒚 + 𝑭 = 𝟎

From the forgoing equation: Also:

If 𝐵 2 < 4𝐴𝐶, the conic is an ellipse If A= 𝐶, the conic is a circle
If 𝐵 2 = 4𝐴𝐶, the conic is a parabola If 𝐴 ≠ 𝐶 but the same sign, the conic is an ellipse
If 𝐵 2 > 4𝐴𝐶, the conic is a hyperbola If 𝐴 ≠ 𝐶 but have different sign, the conic is a hyperbola
If either A or C is Zero, the conic is a parabola.
