LESSON 1: THE NATURE, GOALS AND PERSPECTIVE OF ANTHROPOLOGY,

SOCIOLOGY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE


Anthropology
-is derived from the Latin word “anthropologia” which translates as “the study of
humanity” .
-focuses on the areas of what man/woman can be in the society

Ex.
comparing social structures, like family dynamics, and study transnational
corporations.

Sociology
-more concern with the social behavior of a person in a community.
-is concerned in all social dynamism and interactions

Ex.
studying the relationship between culture and society

August Comte
-father of sociology
-has served a big impact and later inspired other people to work for the
development of societal concerns

Max Weber
-develop the idea of social behaviorism
-He also added that it is distinguished with two kinds of social groups: primary
group and secondary group.

Social Behaviorism
-This is an area of which the role and behavioral responses of man in the society is
the center of the study

Primary Group
-defined as the direct or intimate relations like family and relative.

Secondary Group
-described as the interactions of members in a specific range of activities like
friends, workmates and church-mates.

Political Science
-is the study of social organization centered on the system and ideals of the
government
-art of government public affairs and focuses on the consensus power and
distribution of resources.
- serves as the study of the political system and the impact of the good
governance advocated by the leaders.
- enables leaders to improve the political dynamism of a certain government in
order to fully respond to the basic needs of the society

Ex.
study of the processes of government (the classic example is "how a bill becomes
a law")
Politics
-comes from the Greek word “polis” which means “city or state”, while science is
coined from the word “scientia”.
-is the concrete succession of power to the different political branches in order to
actualize and expedite the workforce for all the constituents.

Ex.
election

David Easton
-wrote the famous “The Political System: An Inquiry into the State of Political
Science”.
