The Impact of Teaching English as a Social Service Strategy on Children from a

Vulnerable Population.

English is a global language and is widely used in international communication,

trade, and tourism. In many countries, English proficiency is considered a valuable skill

that can lead to greater educational and employment opportunities. However, children

from vulnerable populations, such as those from low-income families or marginalized

communities, may not have access to quality English language education. Teaching

English as a social service strategy can be an effective way to provide these children

with the language skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. Besides, this

represents a meaningful experience for tenth graders at the Fundación Gimnasio Pereira

(GP), not only for their academic but also for their personal growth.

In fact, De Sousa (2009) states that it is necessary to provide students with more

valuable learning experiences so that they understand how knowledge can transform

lives. In this sense, the study will assess the impact of teaching English as a social

service strategy on the social and educational outcomes of children from a vulnerable

population, including academic performance, language proficiency, social skills, and

confidence. It involves a qualitative approach as it aims at observing and analyzing the

influence this alternative may have for the children from “Las Brisas” and for students

from grade 10 from the GP.

The study is expected to demonstrate that teaching English as a social service

strategy can have a positive impact on the social and educational outcomes of children

from Las Brisas population. The study will provide insights into the effectiveness of this

approach and offer recommendations for future implementations, so the idea is that this

continues being an option for the coming generations to have their social service done.

The findings of this study may have important implications for students, educators, and

social service providers working with vulnerable populations.
