Perfect vs. Past


 We use present perfect for past events that we don’t know the time e.g. I’ve been to
Australia.
 We use present perfect for recent past events e.g. Have you finished cooking dinner?
 We use present perfect for unfinished states e.g. We’ve known each other for two weeks
now. Do want to marry me?

 Use simple past for finished events that we know the time.
Con…

 Don’t mention a specific time with the present perfect e.g. I’ve been to a jazz club.
 Use the simple past to say when a past action happened e.g. I went to a jazz club last
night.
