Lesson 4 – Indices of Heat Stress

1. Define heat stress indices? What are the factors taken into account for estimating the
heat stress index?

The heat stress index (HSI), also called the apparent temperature or comfort index, is a measure
of how a given air temperature feels to the average person at a given relative humidity based on
human physiology and on clothing science.

Where,

 M is the Metabolic heart rate

 R is the Radiant heat load
 C is the Convective heat load
 Emax is the Maximum evaporative capacity
 Numeral (100) is the Total Heat load
