STM 004/ GENERAL PHYSICS 2

IDENTIFICATION (2 pts each)

1. It is a measurement of the total magnetic field which passes through a given area.
(MAGNETIC FLUX)
2. A current developed in the wire due to up-and-down movement of the wire in the magnetic
field. (INDUCED CURRENT)
3. It relates the ratio of the image distance and object distance to the ratio of the image height (hi) and
object height (ho). (MAGNIFICATION EQUATION)
4. It is the phenomenon of splitting a beam of white light into its seven constituent colors when passed through a
transparent medium. (DISPERSION OF LIGHT)
5. It is a band of seven colors which is obtained by splitting white light by a glass prism. (SPECTRUM)
6. The angle made by the ray incident on the surface from the line which is normal to the plane at the point of
incidence. (ANGLE OF INCIDENCE)
7. It is a complete reflection of a ray of light within a medium such as water or glass from the surrounding surfaces
back into the medium. (TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION)
8. A German physicist who applied Maxwell's theories to the production and reception of radio waves. He proved
the existence of radio waves in the late 1880s. (HEINRICH HERTZ)
9. The force of attraction or repulsion between two magnetic poles is directly proportional to the product of their
pole strength and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. (MAGNETIC COULOMB
LAW)
10. A wave that is an oscillation of matter or particles, and therefore transfers energy through a medium.
(MECHANICAL WAVES)

PROBLEM SOLVING (3 pts each)

1. A rectangular loop has dimensions of 0.50m and 0.60m. The values of B are 0.02T and 45°, respectively.
Calculate the magnetic flux at the surface. (ANSWER: ΦB = 4.24x10 -3 Wb)
2. An electron experiences a force of 3.5×10−15N when moving at an angle of 37∘ with the direction of
a magnetic field of 2.5×10−3T. How fast was the electron? (ANSWER: 13.7x106 m/s)
3. A boy is in a pool and shines a flashlight toward the level of it at a 35∘ angle to the vertical. At
what angle does the flashlight beam leave the pool? (the index of refraction of glass is 1.33).
(ANSWER: 49.72 DEGREES)
4. The speed of a ray of light in ice is 2.29×108m/s. Find the index of refraction of ice.
(ANSWER: 1.31)
5. A light ray approaches a mirror at an angle of 22° with the mirror surface. What is the angle of reflection
of this light ray? (ANSWER: 68 DEGREES)
