General Information
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Personal safety should be your primary concern when maintenance or service operations are performed on a Kohler
DTV II Showering System. As such, these general safety requirements should be heeded at all times:

• All electrical work should be performed by a qualified electrician or Kohler Authorized Service Representative
(ASR).
• When servicing electrical components or any portion of the system where high voltages may be
encountered, be sure the power to the entire system is turned OFF. When the power must be turned on for
voltage measurements, for example, use extreme caution.
• No unauthorized modifications or alterations should ever be made to the Kohler DTV II Showering System
components.

WARNING: Electrical shock can cause severe injury or death to the user and/or service
personnel.

• Kohler Co. will not assume responsibility for product performance or safety where replacement components
or parts other than Genuine Kohler Replacement Parts or authorized alternates are used. Should any
deviation be noted that would indicate unauthorized modification, Kohler Co. recommends you contact the
Customer Service Department for clarification.
• The instructions, drawings, and diagrams contained in this manual present information available at the time
of printing. Although every attempt has been made to keep them up-to-date, Kohler Co. reserves the right to
implement product changes without further notice.

General Information

1069763-X1-A Page 2-4 Kohler Co.

Theory of Operation
DIGITAL THERMOSTATIC VALVE (DTV)
The digital thermostatic valve (DTV) is controlled by either a master or auxiliary user interface (UI). Power is supplied
to both DTV and UI via a 12 V power supply. The power supply is plugged into a standard 120 V GFCI outlet. Hot and
cold water enters the DTV through ¾" NPT inlets. The water is then mixed by a stepper motor that moves a shuttle to
increase or decrease the flow of hot or cold water. The microcontroller, located on the printed circuit board (PCB),
controls the stepper motor shuttle. A thermistor monitors the outlet water temperature and provides information to the
microcontroller. The microcontroller then maintains the desired temperature and makes any adjustments needed
based on the thermistor feedback. The water outlets are regulated by six independent solenoid valves which are
controlled by the UI.

Frame 3-1

MEDIA MODULE
The media module serves as the connection hub between the DTV, UI, Ethernet, steam system, lighted rain panel,
speaker tiles, audio line in, incandescent lighting, and line power. The media module communicates directly with a
computer through a wired or wireless Ethernet connection to access music files and internet radio. All devices
connected to the media module are controlled via the UI(s).

Frame 3-2

USER INTERFACE (UI)

The user interface is connected to, and powered by, the media module. A maximum of two interfaces may be
connected to the system, a primary interface - located within the shower, and an optional auxiliary interface - located
outside the shower. The UI is designed to be mounted to the finished wall surface. The UI has five icons located on
the face of the unit: POWER, USER 123, USER 456, OK, and Back. In addition to the icons, there is also a dial for
menu navigation or the adjustment of temperature, lighting, and volume. The UI communicates through the media
module to control all the shower system functions: water temperature, massage, steam, music, as well as
incandescent and chroma-lighting.

Frame 3-3

STEAM SYSTEM
The RS485 steam adaptor enables the connection of a Kohler steam generator to your showering system. A
temperature sensor is mounted in the shower allowing the temperature and steam functions to be controlled by the
UI.

Frame 3-4

LIGHTED RAIN PANEL

The lighted rain panel is powered by the power data system (PDS). The lighted rain panel communicates through the
PDS to the media module. Four positionable water tile showerheads and the overhead chroma-lighting are controlled
via the user interface. Chroma-lighting options include solid colors, customizeable color (color dial), and several
preprogrammed color effects.

Frame 3-5

SPEAKER TILE
Up to four speakers may be connected to the media module. Speakers are powered through the media module.
Music is accessed through a wired/wireless ethernet connection or via the line in cable. Music functionality including
sound volume is controlled via the user interface.

Troubleshooting
ISOLATING THE PROBLEM
There are two steps for resolving a Kohler DTV II Showering System malfunction:

Troubleshooting Tables
1. Use the Troubleshooting and Error Code Tables to isolate the malfunction.
Troubleshooting Procedures
2. Whenever you repair, replace, or adjust any components or assemblies of a DTV II system, always check that
the problem has been solved, and that no other problems exist. If the valve works correctly when reinstalled and
retested, discontinue troubleshooting.
