Lesson Goals:

[Students will compose a poem that reflects themselves and their positive aspects.
Poem will later be set to music.]

Lesson Objectives:

 [Student’s will generate a list of positive attributes about themselves.]


 Student’s will help others generate a list of positive attributes
 Student’s will use a mad lib type template to create a poem, using their
positive attributes to fill in the blanks.
 Student’s will read their poems to their work groups and nominate a
member to read their poem to the class

Materials/Resources Needed:

 Affirmation song
 Positive self-talk video
 [Paper
 Pencils
 Premade Mad-lib style poem format.

Student’s will listen to the affirmation song and sing along

Student’s will then watch an example of a what positive self-talk is.


After the video, student’s will discuss in small groups what they believe the purpose
of positive self-talk is, and why it is important.

Students will break up into groups of 4 and begin generating lists of positive
attributes about themselves. They may ask their group or the teacher for help if
they are finding it hard to generate ideas.

Once students have generated their list they will begin plugging in their attributes
to the prewritten lyrics, filling in the blanks. Students will then practice saying the
lyrics rhythmically with their groups.

Student’s will then elect one person from their group to perform the poem in front
of the class.

This lesson will continue to part 2 in which the student’s will break down the poem
rhythmically and set it to a simple melody which they will compose.

Evaluation:

[Student’s form will be collected. They will be evaluated on completion of the form
for the first lesson
