Set units to ​MM


2. Create a ​New Component​ called ​Tube
3. Create a ​sketch ​on the ​side ​plane
a. Draw a ​⌀45mm​ ​circle
b. Use the new ​Extrude Thin Wall​ command to create a pipe!
i. Distance = ​1200mm
ii. Wall Thickness =​ 1.5mm
4. Use the ​Hole command ​to create an ​8mm​ hole ​30mm​ from the ​right edge​ of the tube
a. The hole should only go through the top of the tube

5. Insert ​a ​McMaster-Carr​ component
a. Search for an ​M8 x 1.25mm Thread Steel Hex Nut ​(part #​90592A022​)
b. Add it into your session
c. Position ​it close to the hole
d. Use the ​Joint Command​ to create a ​Rigid Joint​ with the bottom of the nut with
the top point of the hole

6. Use ​McMaster-Carr​ to insert a ​knob
a. Do a search for ​2907T27 ​in McMaster-Carr search window
b. Insert it into the design
c. Use a ​Revolute joint​ to join the b
​ ottom of the knob​ with the​ bottom of the
hole​ in the pipe

e. Change ​the ​color ​of the knob to a ​yellow plastic
7. Create ​a new ​top-level component ​called ​Table Assembly
8. Drag ​the ​Tube component assembly ​into the ​Table Assembly
9. Right-Click​ on the ​Tube component​ and select ​Copy
10. Right-Click​ on ​Table Assy ​and select ​Paste
a. Drag ​the new assembly to the ​right ​some random distance
b. Rotate ​the assembly horizontally (XY plane) ​180 degrees

11. Create ​a ​New Component ​under the ​Table Assy​ called ​End Cap
12. Create ​a​ new sketch​ on the ​side ​plane
a. Create a ​48mm⌀​ ​center-to-center​ ​slot h
​ orizontally ​185mm wide

14. Shell ​one side of the extrusion ​1.5mm​ wall thickness (inside)
15. Now, there’s supposed to be holes that go through this part, but we are going to come
back to those later
16. Create a ​New Component​ under the ​Table Assy​ called ​End Cap Cover
17. We want to create a plastic cover over the End Cap that just fits over it
a. Switch ​to the ​Surface Tab
b. Do a ​Create-->Offset ​command
c. Select the ​5 faces​ that define the outside of the End Cap
d. Set the ​Distance ​to​ 0.5mm

18. This will create a thin-walled part that is 0.5mm larger than the End Cap
19. Add thickness to the thin-walled part by going to ​Surface-->Create-->Thicken
a. Set the ​thickness ​to ​3mm
b. You now have a 3mm thick cap that covers the other body with 0.5mm of spacing
20. Create a ​sketch ​on the ​outside flat face​ of the End Cap Cover
a. Project ​the face onto the sketch
b. Use the ​Create-->Point​ command to create ​3 points​ on the face in random
locations (see image)

d. Horizontally constrain​ the right point to be ​horizontally constrained​ with the
center of the slot arc
e. Dimension ​this point to be ​30mm left​ of the center of the arc

g. Use a ​Vertical Constraint​ to make the​ two points​ on the left ​vertically
constrained with each other
h. Dimension ​the points to be ​25mm between the two
i. Draw a ​construction line vertically​ between the two points
j. Draw a ​construction line​ from the m​ idpoint ​of the vertical line to the ​center
point of the arc
k. Constrain ​that construction line to be ​horizontal
l. Dimension ​the 2 points to be ​30mm ​from the ​center point of the arc

n. Press ​Finish Sketch
21. Switch ​back to the ​Solid tab
22. Use the ​Hole Command​ to create 6 ​ mm⌀​ holes at the ​3 points​ you created
a. In the Hole dialog, change the ​Placement ​to ​From Sketch
b. Change the ​Extents t​ o ​All
c. Change the ​Hole Type​ to ​Countersink ​and enter ​11.2​ for the chamfer diameter
d. Change the​ Drill Point ​to ​Flat
e. Expand open ​Objects To Cut​ and notice it is creating the hole through both parts
at the same time!

23. Add ​a ​1mm fillet​ around the edge of the face you just put the holes on
24. Change the appearance​ of the End Cap Cover to ​Plastic-->Textured-->Plastic

25. Set ​the ​Table Assy​ as the ​active component
26. Use ​McMaster-Carr​ to insert an ​M6 Phillips Flat Head Screw​, ​14mm long
(​92010A794​) into your design
a. Position ​it close to the End Cap Cover
b. Use a ​Rigid Joint ​to join the ​top edge of the screw​ with the ​top edge of the
chamfer​ on the End Cap Cover
27. Use​ McMaster-Carr​ to insert an ​M6 Steel Hex Nut (90592A016)
a. Position ​it close to the End Cap
b. Use a ​Rigid Joint​ to join the b​ ottom of the nut​ with the​ edge of the hole​ on the
End Cap

28. Shift-Select​ the ​Screw ​and the ​Nut ​from the ​browser ​and ​right-click-->Copy
29. Right-click​ on the ​Table Assy​ and select P ​ aste
a. Drag ​the screw and nut past the part and hit ​Ok
30. Drag ​the ​screw ​around and notice the nut doesn’t move with it? ​This is because the
joints didn’t copy
31. Under ​Assemble​, select ​Rigid Group​ and select the s ​ crew ​and the ​nut
a. Now when you drag the screw, the nut moves with it.
32. Create a ​Rigid Joint​ of the ​screw ​with one of the ​other holes
33. Copy-Paste​ the ​screw assembly​ again and ​re-create​ a​ Rigid Group
34. Create a ​Rigid Joint​ of the ​screw ​with ​the last hole
35. Drag ​the ​End Cap Cover​ and notice the cover, the screws, and the nuts all move
together, but the End Cap does not
a. Create ​a ​Rigid Group​ of the E ​ nd Cap Cover​ and the​ End Cap
b. Now it all moves as one.
36. Our browser is starting to get a bit complicated, so let’s clean things up
a. Right-Click​ on ​Table Assy​ and select N ​ ew Component ​and name it H ​ ardware
b. In the ​Browser​, select the ​screws ​and ​nuts ​we just placed (6 in all) and ​drag
them ​onto the ​Hardware component

37. Now let’s finish designing the End Cap Cover
38. Make sure the ​End Cap Cover component​ is ​active
39. Edit ​the ​sketch ​in the timeline
a. Create ​a ​Centered Rectangle​ at the ​center point​ on the left of the cover ​35mm
x 35mm
40. Extrude ​the rectangle outwards ​25mm ​using the new ​Thin Wall ​option,​ 2mm ​wall
thickness

41. Notice the rectangle does not go all the way through the Cover

42. Select ​the ​inside face​ and ​right-click-->Extrude
a. Start to ​drag ​the ​arrow ​through the part
b. Change the ​Extent ​to​ All
c. Expand open ​the ​Objects to Cut​ and notice it is cutting through ​both ​the ​cover
and the ​end cap
43. Change ​the ​Wall Thickness​ of the e ​ xtrude feature​ in the timeline to ​6​ and press ​ok
a. Notice the extrude through both parts updates also
b. Undo
44. Activate ​the​ End Cap component ​and notice the extrude feature exists at the end of its
timeline also.
45. Now let’s position the End Cap into place
a. Activate ​the ​Table Assy​ component
b. Create ​a ​Rigid Joint​ from the ​center of the arc​ on the ​inside ​of the ​End Cap​ to
the ​edge of the tube

d. Press ​OK
46. Create ​another ​Rigid Joint​, but this time between the ​end of the other pipe​ to the
inside of the end cap

47. We now want a copy of this on the other side of the tubes
48. Right-click​ on the ​Table Assy​ and select N
​ ew Component​ and name it ​End Cap Assy
a. Drag ​the ​End Cap​, ​End Cap Cover​, and ​Hardware components​ into the ​End
Cap Assy
49. We want the whole End Cap Assy to stay “together”, like one assembled rigid group
a. Right-click​ on ​End Cap Assy​ and select ​Rigid Group
50. Now,​ right-click ​on ​End Cap Assy​ and select ​Move/Copy
a. Make sure you select ​Create Copy​ in the dialog before you do anything else!
b. Rotate ​the assembly ​180 degrees​ and ​drag ​it past the end of the tubes

51. Create ​a​ Rigid Joint​ between the​ inside center point​ of the​ End Cap​ with the ​end of
the pipe
52. You should now have a copy of the End Cap Assembly in the correct location.
53. The last thing to do is to add the support cross-member between the two pipes
a. Create ​a ​New Component​ called ​Center Tube ​under the ​Table Assy
b. We will need a Mid-plane between the pipes
c. Turn off​ ​both End Cap Assemblies
d. Under ​Construct menu​, select ​Axis Through Cylinder
i. Click ​on ​one of the pipes
e. Repeat ​with the ​other pipe

g. Now, under the ​Construct Menu​, select ​Plane at an Angle​ and ​click the axis
line
i. If necessary, ​rotate t​ he plane so it is ​vertical
h. Repeat ​with the ​other axis

j. Lastly, go to ​Construct-->Midplane​ and select the two planes and a new plane
will be created between the two.

54. Create a sketch​ on the ​midplane
a. Project ​one of the ​pipe bodies
b. Draw ​two ​construction lines​ corner to corner to get a “crossing point location”

d. Create ​a​ 25.4 ⌀​ ​circle ​at the crossing point
55. Do an ​Extrude ​of the circular profile
a. Change the ​Direction ​to ​Two Sides
b. Change the ​Extend ​to ​To Object​ and select one of the pipes
c. Change the ​Extend ​of the other side to ​To Object ​and select the other pipe
d. Notice the extrusion “curves” around to match the larger pipes

56. Change the ​Extrude Type​ to ​Thin Extrude​ and type in​ 1.5mm​ for the ​Wall Thickness

57. Turn off ​the ​Construction ​folder under the ​Center Tube
58. Turn ​back ​on ​the ​End Cap Assemblies
59. Save​!

For fun, activate the End Cap component and edit the sketch and change the length of the slot
to 300 and watch how everything updates!
