orizontally 185mm wide
b.
13. Extrude the profile 19mm
14. Shell one side of the extrusion 1.5mm wall thickness (inside)
15. Now, there’s supposed to be holes that go through this part, but we are going to come
back to those later
16. Create a New Component under the Table Assy called End Cap Cover
17. We want to create a plastic cover over the End Cap that just fits over it
a. Switch to the Surface Tab
b. Do a Create-->Offset command
c. Select the 5 faces that define the outside of the End Cap
d. Set the Distance to 0.5mm
e.
18. This will create a thin-walled part that is 0.5mm larger than the End Cap
19. Add thickness to the thin-walled part by going to Surface-->Create-->Thicken
a. Set the thickness to 3mm
b. You now have a 3mm thick cap that covers the other body with 0.5mm of spacing
20. Create a sketch on the outside flat face of the End Cap Cover
a. Project the face onto the sketch
b. Use the Create-->Point command to create 3 points on the face in random
locations (see image)
c.
d. Horizontally constrain the right point to be horizontally constrained with the
center of the slot arc
e. Dimension this point to be 30mm left of the center of the arc
f.
g. Use a Vertical Constraint to make the two points on the left vertically
constrained with each other
h. Dimension the points to be 25mm between the two
i. Draw a construction line vertically between the two points
j. Draw a construction line from the m idpoint of the vertical line to the center
point of the arc
k. Constrain that construction line to be horizontal
l. Dimension the 2 points to be 30mm from the center point of the arc
m.
n. Press Finish Sketch
21. Switch back to the Solid tab
22. Use the Hole Command to create 6 mm⌀ holes at the 3 points you created
a. In the Hole dialog, change the Placement to From Sketch
b. Change the Extents t o All
c. Change the Hole Type to Countersink and enter 11.2 for the chamfer diameter
d. Change the Drill Point to Flat
e. Expand open Objects To Cut and notice it is creating the hole through both parts
at the same time!
f.
23. Add a 1mm fillet around the edge of the face you just put the holes on
24. Change the appearance of the End Cap Cover to Plastic-->Textured-->Plastic
Texture Random
25. Set the Table Assy as the active component
26. Use McMaster-Carr to insert an M6 Phillips Flat Head Screw, 14mm long
(92010A794) into your design
a. Position it close to the End Cap Cover
b. Use a Rigid Joint to join the top edge of the screw with the top edge of the
chamfer on the End Cap Cover
27. Use McMaster-Carr to insert an M6 Steel Hex Nut (90592A016)
a. Position it close to the End Cap
b. Use a Rigid Joint to join the b ottom of the nut with the edge of the hole on the
End Cap
c.
28. Shift-Select the Screw and the Nut from the browser and right-click-->Copy
29. Right-click on the Table Assy and select P aste
a. Drag the screw and nut past the part and hit Ok
30. Drag the screw around and notice the nut doesn’t move with it? This is because the
joints didn’t copy
31. Under Assemble, select Rigid Group and select the s crew and the nut
a. Now when you drag the screw, the nut moves with it.
32. Create a Rigid Joint of the screw with one of the other holes
33. Copy-Paste the screw assembly again and re-create a Rigid Group
34. Create a Rigid Joint of the screw with the last hole
35. Drag the End Cap Cover and notice the cover, the screws, and the nuts all move
together, but the End Cap does not
a. Create a Rigid Group of the E nd Cap Cover and the End Cap
b. Now it all moves as one.
36. Our browser is starting to get a bit complicated, so let’s clean things up
a. Right-Click on Table Assy and select N ew Component and name it H ardware
b. In the Browser, select the screws and nuts we just placed (6 in all) and drag
them onto the Hardware component
c.
37. Now let’s finish designing the End Cap Cover
38. Make sure the End Cap Cover component is active
39. Edit the sketch in the timeline
a. Create a Centered Rectangle at the center point on the left of the cover 35mm
x 35mm
40. Extrude the rectangle outwards 25mm using the new Thin Wall option, 2mm wall
thickness
a.
41. Notice the rectangle does not go all the way through the Cover
a.
42. Select the inside face and right-click-->Extrude
a. Start to drag the arrow through the part
b. Change the Extent to All
c. Expand open the Objects to Cut and notice it is cutting through both the cover
and the end cap
43. Change the Wall Thickness of the e xtrude feature in the timeline to 6 and press ok
a. Notice the extrude through both parts updates also
b. Undo
44. Activate the End Cap component and notice the extrude feature exists at the end of its
timeline also.
45. Now let’s position the End Cap into place
a. Activate the Table Assy component
b. Create a Rigid Joint from the center of the arc on the inside of the End Cap to
the edge of the tube
c.
d. Press OK
46. Create another Rigid Joint, but this time between the end of the other pipe to the
inside of the end cap
a.
47. We now want a copy of this on the other side of the tubes
48. Right-click on the Table Assy and select N
ew Component and name it End Cap Assy
a. Drag the End Cap, End Cap Cover, and Hardware components into the End
Cap Assy
49. We want the whole End Cap Assy to stay “together”, like one assembled rigid group
a. Right-click on End Cap Assy and select Rigid Group
50. Now, right-click on End Cap Assy and select Move/Copy
a. Make sure you select Create Copy in the dialog before you do anything else!
b. Rotate the assembly 180 degrees and drag it past the end of the tubes
c.
51. Create a Rigid Joint between the inside center point of the End Cap with the end of
the pipe
52. You should now have a copy of the End Cap Assembly in the correct location.
53. The last thing to do is to add the support cross-member between the two pipes
a. Create a New Component called Center Tube under the Table Assy
b. We will need a Mid-plane between the pipes
c. Turn off both End Cap Assemblies
d. Under Construct menu, select Axis Through Cylinder
i. Click on one of the pipes
e. Repeat with the other pipe
f.
g. Now, under the Construct Menu, select Plane at an Angle and click the axis
line
i. If necessary, rotate t he plane so it is vertical
h. Repeat with the other axis
i.
j. Lastly, go to Construct-->Midplane and select the two planes and a new plane
will be created between the two.
i.
54. Create a sketch on the midplane
a. Project one of the pipe bodies
b. Draw two construction lines corner to corner to get a “crossing point location”
c.
d. Create a 25.4 ⌀ circle at the crossing point
55. Do an Extrude of the circular profile
a. Change the Direction to Two Sides
b. Change the Extend to To Object and select one of the pipes
c. Change the Extend of the other side to To Object and select the other pipe
d. Notice the extrusion “curves” around to match the larger pipes
e.
56. Change the Extrude Type to Thin Extrude and type in 1.5mm for the Wall Thickness
a.
57. Turn off the Construction folder under the Center Tube
58. Turn back on the End Cap Assemblies
59. Save!
For fun, activate the End Cap component and edit the sketch and change the length of the slot
to 300 and watch how everything updates!
