Saw Ba U Gyi was the first president of Karen National Union who was the most important leader in

Karen history. August 12th, 1950 was the year of the great loss of precious for the entire Karen people.
It was the day that the Karen president of Saw Ba U Gyi was ambushed and killed by the Burmese
Army, with other Karen leaders. he has served and sacrifice five years for his people to get
independence(homeland). Up to this day the 12th of August is respected as martyr's day. Thus, all of
the people of Karen celebrate the Karen martyr's day every year.
Saw Ba U Gyi was born on 1903, 7th October in Begayet village near Pathein township, the capital of
Irrawaddy division. His mother name is Naw Bway Poe and his father name is Saw Thar Mya Gyi.
Saw Ba U Gyi fatehr's was a landowner, and he was also the headman of the village. Saw Ba U Gyi
grew up together with his two older, and two younger sisters, he is the only son.
Saw Ba U Gyi went to a Baptist high school at Dr. Nichol high School, which was called the Ko Tha
Pyu School in Pathein. After he passed Grade 7 at Pathein and he went to study at Mawlamya English
School (Wettest school).
