MINI PROJECT

THE USE OF INORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON CROPS AND THEIR IMPACT ON

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE KUMASI METROPOLIS

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Over the last century, Africa has experienced a massive growth in population which has
increased the demand for food and has made supply very difficult. To meet this aggregate
demand, farmers are expected to increase production and grow at least double of what was being
produced in the previous years. In attempt to increase production, some farmers decided to use
inorganic fertilizers in growing their crops which has had both positive and negative impact on
sustainable development. Inorganic fertilizer which is also referred to as synthetic fertilizer is
manufactured artificially and contains minerals or synthetic chemicals which helps to increase
yield, crop or fruit size and its able to persuade crops to early maturity and on the other hand, the
chemicals used in making these fertilizers is having a tremendous effect on the society; also
inorganic fertilizers persuade crops to reach early maturity which is not good for consumption.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The purpose of this study is to highlight the negative impact of inorganic fertilizers to
environmental sustainability. For increase in agricultural production and yield, we must focus on
nutrient management and fertilizer application. Inorganic fertilizer are beneficial for proper
growth of crops due to the form in which it's been applied to the crops.
However, excessive application of inorganic fertilizers causes environmental damage, pollution
of water sources and decrease beneficial living organisms. Inorganic fertilizers consists of
mineral based nutrient manufactured for immediate application on crops if the right requirement
or procedures are not used during fertilizer application is goes a long way to affect the soil,
leading to pollution of water bodies around farming areas.

Metropolis
2. What are the main factors that influence the use of inorganic fertilizers in the Kumasi
Metropolis
3. What are the various constraints faced by Farmers in the use of inorganic fertilizers in the
Kumasi Metropolis
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
1. To estimate the quantity and value of inorganic fertilizers in the Kumasi metropolis
2. To evaluate the key factors that explain the use of inorganic fertilizers in the Kumasi
metropolis
3. To examine the various constraints faced by producers in the use of inorganic fertilizers in the
Kumasi metropolis
