History
The M1911 was created by John Browning under contract with Colt. The
original Colt 1900, a pioneering semi-automatic pistol chambered in the
now-forgotten 38 ACP, is where the M1911 derives its heritage from. When the
Army was looking for a new service handgun, the Mauser and Mannlicher
designs competed with the original Colt 1900. Although the Colt 1900 functioned
superbly, the Army dragged its feet as it usually does. In the interval, it adopted
Colt and S&W revolvers and gradually tried out automatic pistols. Colt continued
to produce the 1900, which later evolved into the 1902 and the 1905 when the
Army realized it needed a projectile with a 45 caliber.
The 1911 handgun platform has developed a reputation as an accurate
and dependable shooter over the course of more than a century. particularly
created to meet U.S. criteria The current military handgun, a double action
revolver chambered in.38, was discontinued by the Army after a war in the
Philippines proved it lacked the stopping capability soldiers need on the
battlefield. The Army and Marines started using 45 caliber Model 1873 Colt
revolvers that had been stocked since the Plains Indian Wars out of desperation.
The army started looking for a new service sidearm because, despite their
antiquity, these revolvers proved to be more effective as a defensive handgun for
Americans fighting in the Philippines than their newer pistols. Like today, a
number of gun manufacturers participated in the selection process. Guns from
Colt, Luger, Savage, Knoble, Bergmann, White-Merrill, and Smith & Wesson were
among those submitted; Browning's entry for Colt ultimately took first place.
Browning's dependable design was groundbreaking because it combined two
relatively new technologies (autoloading and smokeless gunpowder), which is
obvious when you consider that the same design, with only minor adjustments,
is still in use and quite popular today. Worldwide, 1911 enthusiasts continue to
put these guns through their paces and are more than willing to compare their
1911s against the best polymer guns currently available.
