Falls and rises

Martin Nicholson - 31/08/2020 14:09

It's only natural that, as you start your work on tone and tonicity, you'll experience difficulty identifying and
producing falls and rises.

Listen to the following conversation and identify either a fall or a fall-rise.

Transcribe (orthographically) the sentence and mark the chunks and their tones (rises or falls).

There's a question tag: is it a fall or a rise? Why?

/We live in a world RISE /where a lot of men FALL have to be fake extroverts FALL-RISE/ when they’re introverted
FALL-RISE /and a lot of women have to be fake introverts FALL / when they’re extroverted. FALL /That is not an
excellent state of affairs FALL /is it? FALL /

0:11 - No RISE /no, it’s not. RISE / You know FALL- RISE / It’s toxic FALL masculinity/ isn’t it? FALL / Because if you’re a
sensitive FALL man /then you’re somehow not a proper FALL man. / You know FALL- RISE / And if you’re a ballsy
FALL-RISE woman / then you’re somehow not a lady. FALL /

/Grown-ups think that’s what being a bloke is RISE /that’s what being a girl is RISE / they’re the models we’ve been
set RISE /and it’s the same being introvert or extrovert FALL / You know FALL- RISE / You don’t have to be either.
FALL / You are what you are. FALL / You know FALL- RISE / We’re all faking it RISE/ till we make it RISE / to a certain
extent. FALL /We are all FALL /extroverts that have to fake being introverted like you said FALL / and introverts have
to fake being extroverted in certain situations. FALL / I think most of us are FALL /what’s the word used? FALL
/Ambiverts? /

/Ambiverts FALL /

/I think we probably mostly are./

/I just love being at the traffic lights before they’re about to change. FALL /

/Oh mate./

Because if you’re a sensitive (fall) man /then you’re somehow not a proper (fall) man. / You know (fall-

rise) / And if you’re a ballsy (fall) woman / then you’re somehow not a lady. (fall) /

0:11 - The first question “isn’t it?” is a FALLING tone because the utterance ends. It can also be a

“filler” to keep the conversation going.

0:15 - The second question “isn’t it?” is a FALLING tone because the utterance ends. It can also be a

“filler” to keep the conversation going.

0:46 - The third question what’s the word used? Is a FALL tone because the speaker is expecting some information
in the answer.

The fourth question Ambiverts? Is a FALL tone because the speaker will not continue speaking but implies that
something has been left unsaid.
