Case Study
Seniority in the Organization

Daulong Resources Corporation has the policy of promoting employees from within the organization on a
company wide basis. Seniority is based on the length of service and the performance ratings.

Rod Santos was hired as mechanical engineer trainee on March 2002 and got a performance rating of very
satisfactory. He was a trainee for six months before his promotion to Engineer I at Section A of the
machine shop section.

Roger Santiago was hired on January 2003 as engineer trainee in Section B of the machine shop and had
performance rating of very satisfactory for the last two years. Both Santos and Santiago are mechanical
engineering graduates of a prestigious school.

The position of Supervising Engineer in Section B was left vacant with the promotion of Art Real to Plant
Superintendent of both Section A and B. Due to seniority rule, Rod Santos was promoted to the post.
While Real would like to recommend Roger Santiago to the post, the HR department policy on seniority
rule had to be applied, hence the intention watered down when he talked to the HR manager. Art Real
talked to Rod Santos about his case and Rod Santos understood that Roger Santiago was also interested in
the position.

One month later, a major machine broke down and only Roger Santiago single-handedly worked
diligently on the machine and completed it in due time to meet the customers’ demand. During break time
after the successful repair, Rod Santos in the presence of other workers, complemented the efforts and
expertise of Roger. “Roger, thanks for the excellent work you have done. You are the best engineer
around here and I would like you to know that I appreciate very much your effort. You have the
knowledge, skills and experience around here and you are the number one engineer along this line”.

With the compliment, Roger Santiago retorted a little sarcastically “I know how all these things run here
as I am of those who installed that machine. I know more about this whole thing than you do. If only the
HR department knew how to recognize people with potential, you would not be here in the first place.”

In this case, present the following:
1. Problem
2. Case Facts
3. Analysis/Hypothesis
4. Alternative Courses of Action
5. Recommendation and Conclusion

a) Problem
Hr practitioner failed to noticed the Roger excellent abilities and potentiality the organization.
However, the decision made by hr is right because the organization clearly stated at first that
seniority is based on the length of service and the performance ratings. Knowingly that Rod
Santos ahead of one year than Roger , evidently Rod Santos deserve that spot. When the machine
broke down and Roger Santiago single-handed the work, he fixed it diligently. Rod Santos who
where the head of the Section B has done nothing but praise Roger Santiago for his good work.
The complement of Mr. Santos was not received well by Mr. Santiago. He answered Mr. Santos
sarcastically and tell him that he's more talented than him and is more applicable to the position

b) Case Facts

Daulong Resources Corporation has the policy of promoting employees from within the
organization on a company wide basis. Seniority is based on the length of service and the
performance ratings. The position of supervising engineer in Section B. was left vacant with the
promotion of Art Real to Plant Superintendent of both Section A and B, Due to the seniority
rule, Rod Santos was promoted to the post. While art would like to recommend
Roger Santiago to the post, the HR department policy seniority rule had applied , hence the
intention watered down when he talked to the HR manager . Art talked to Rod Santos about his
case and Rod Santos understood that Roger Santiago was also interested in the position.

c) Analysis/Hypothesis

I don't see anything wrong in the seniority role of the company. But they know the Mr.Roger Santiago
was a trainee at section B and it is where Mr. Rod Santos promoted but he is a trainee from section A.
Therefore, Mr. Roger Santiago have many knowledge about the section B that is why he finished the
work easily when there was a machine breakdown. The company should've put Mr. Santiago in
section B and waited the section A to be vacant also so that Mr. Santos will be appointed in that
section.

d) Alternative Courses of Action

The company should also prefer the skills and potentiality of their employees before promoting
senior employee. The company should also fair to all of their employees. Lastly, the company
should not only based on seniority level of their employees.

e) Recommendation and Conclusion

Seniority in the company is an advantage to them. If an employee has experience in the company,
therefore he/she already know what to do. But I would also like to recommend to this company
to base from the skills of their trainee and not only on their seniority in the company. I therefore
conclude that the company and Mr. Santiago has mistakes. The company should have informed
both of the section and other departments. He also should listened to Art on hir recommendation
about putting Mr. Santiago as Head od Section B. On the other hand, Mr. Santiago should have
respected the decisions made by the head department and never treated Mr. Rod Santos that
way.
