Briefing Information
The problem is modeled on real life situations related to the different aspects of surveying including
basic understanding of tendering procedure, contractual arrangement and various aspects of project
management involving the Government; Government policies and developers’ and contractor’s
business orientations.
The design of the problem scenarios is intended to provide students with an opportunity to correlate
information from different sources in order to put what they have learned in classes and from their
reading into practice in real life situations in relation to the tendering procedure, contractual
arrangement and various project management aspects of a project.
The studio project will last 12 weeks. It is a project involving a real case for possible tasks. There
will be 4 major tasks -
Each of the first 3 tasks will last about 3-4 weeks. The class will be divided into 12 groups and each
group will be facilitated by a studio facilitator. Each of the groups will be required to submit interim
group report for the first 2 tasks (but not the 3rd task) and a final group report is required to include all
the tasks. Moreover, each of the group members will be required to submit log sheets to reflect their
effort spent on the task. It is expected that each group will work independently for the same task. The
studio project will be concluded with a group presentation and the final group report.
The time-tabled slots of time will be used for the group to meet their facilitators or to attend guest
lectures, which will be arranged from time to time. The team may contact their facilitators outside the
scheduled meeting time if they have questions in the interim.

The project
The project is based on a real case of the Revitalization of No. 12 School Street, Tai Hang. You are
expected to research into areas related to Government policy regarding revitalization of heritage, the
tendering procedure and contractual arrangements for this kind of project extensively.
The details of the site and the existing project can be found in the project brief and the reference
materials.
Grouping of students
There are 6 facilitators this year and the class will be divided into 12 groups. Each facilitator will
look after 2 groups. Despite the wide spectrum of expertise of the facilitators, including quantity
surveying, economics, project management and construction law etc., they are there to facilitate you
to identify and address the possible problems that you may encounter as you proceed along your
thoughts. They will inspire you in the way to move ahead in order to achieve your objectives. Please
do not treat your facilitator as your supervisor or someone your project team needs to report to. In
other words, they are not the boss in your company or your client!
