Use of ‘nigger’ or ‘nigga’ television has become disturbing, irritating and even

humiliating for black people in the society. In the light of this situation, governments should
ban the word “nigger” and its variant “nigga” on television in terms of order to protecting
children in order not to be exposed them, forgetting or getting rid of the history of “nigger”
and “nigga”, and decreaseing the total of hatred in public.

The first argument why governments ought to ban the word “nigger” and
“niggenigga” on television is that if the slurs like “nigger” and “nigga” are banned from
television, some children will not be exposed to them. In that way, they will not know these
slurs and they will not be able to use them. Firstly, when a child does not know “nigger” and
“nigge” and where these words are used, he or she cannot use them so as to humiliate black
children. Thanks to this, black children’s feelings cannot be harmed and hurted by other
children using these slurs. In this direction, Justice Stevens declared that “Although Cohen’s
written message might have been incomprehensible to a first grader, Pacifica’s broadcast
could have enlarged a child’s vocabulary in an instant” (Fcc FCC v. Pacifica Foundation,
1978, p. 3). Governments and their authorities can grasp from the quote that even a child does
not want to know “nigger” or “nigga”, she or he can be exposed to them and these profanities
can take place in his or her mind. Secondly, when a child use “nigger” or “nigga” against a
black child, this black child may feel that he or she does not belong to the society and even
feel that he or she is out of the society because of a word that is used by a child learning
“nigger” or “nigga” via television. If a child has these kinds of thoughts, it is likely that he or
she may be a threat to society. To give an example, most of the criminals in U.S. are black
people and when asked them whether “nigger” or “nigga” has been used against them to
humiliate, theThis situation demonstrate that is governments choose a path that “nigger” and
“nigga” can be used on television freely can cause more threatening situations such as
increase in crime rates among black people and disruption of public peace.

The second argument why governments should ban the word “nigger” and “nigge” on
television is that if people maintain using “nigger” and “nigga” on television, the unpleasent
history of these slurs for black people lives forever and it will be a part of the society. Firstly
as long as the history of “nigger” and “nigga” persists in the society because of television, a
society that does not discriminate each other and each citizen shows respect each other cannot
be built. Most of the time, “nigger” is used to disccriminate against black people and to show
them they are useless and different from white people. Even use of “nigger” against a black
person may result in fightning with or the worst killing the people knowing the history of
“nigger” and its effects on black people. In order to protect both individuals, governments
have to ban the slurs on television. Secondly, if “nigger” and “nigga” are banned from
television by governments, these profanities and their histories can vanish. As George Orwell
(1949) wrote that if problematic words can be removed from the language and human’s
minds, problems that these words cause are able to be solved. In this direction, when
governments ban “nigger” and “nigga” from television, their unpleasent histories and
meanings start to recede (fade out) in human minds. Use of these words will diminish and it
demonstrates that people have less slurs to insult and discriminate against each other.
“Nigger” and “nigge” will be less part of the society and a more peaceful and less hazardous
society cn be created by governments banning “nigger” and “nigga” on television.
The third argument why governments should ban the word “nigger” and “nigge” on
television is that people use “nigger” or its variant so as to express their anger on television,
but use of these words is offensive for black people and this situation can cause to boost the
total hatred in public. When this happens, people start to show violence, argue with each
other and hurt other people who have different skin colors or do not think the same. The
Main reason for all these is the increase in the total hatred in public. Justice Harlan argued
that “[Their] uses are likely to cause violent reaction, the [governments] may properly
remove this offensive word from the public vocabulary” (Cohen v. California, 1971, p. 3).
The court in the case of Cohen made a decision in favor of protecting the First Amendment
and it can be seen that freedom of speech is protected, but during this time many children
have been deprived of having a better life than they have now. This point comes the argument
here that a great majority black children that have grown up in a family that one or two of the
parents are furious owing to being exposed to “nigger” or its variants on television. This
situation can cause these parents to angrily act on their children or show it to their children
without any reason. These kinds of behaviors can affect children’s school lives and even
future lives. It is likely that children growing up in an angry family have a tendency to have
poor grades and have less salary than other children. Governments can prevent such a
situation only by banning the word “nigger” and its variant “nigga”.

In conclusion, banning the use of “nigger” or “nigga” on television can be seen to be

more advantageous not to banning “nigger” or “nigga” from television because of preserving
unsupervised children, eliminating the history of “nigger” and “nigga” and decreasing the
total hatred in public. Governments can save lots of lives and restrict many affair in public by
just banning the slurs from television.
