SIR JJ COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE

Kiosk
• A kiosk refers to a small, temporary, stand-alone booth used
in various areas for marketing purposes.
• Kiosks may be manned by one or two individuals or may be
electronic.
• These booths are considered to be low-cost marketing
strategies that are great alternatives for new, emerging
entrepreneurs.
• The different types of kiosks include employment kiosks,
foodservice kiosks, healthcare kiosks, Bitcoin kiosks, and
photo kiosks.
• Kiosks can help raise brand awareness and provide an
interactive way for consumers to engage with a company.
They can also be frustrating if they are not maintained
properly thereby hurting a brand's image.
Food Kiosk
• In an effort to streamline the
process of taking food orders,
some restaurants install self-
service kiosks.
• Customers can follow interactive
prompts to select their meal and
customize their order.
• The kiosks usually accept credit
or debit cards, eliminating the
need for a human cashier.
• Many famous food brands have
their kiosks in various locations
like streets, malls, parks
sometime even in fairs.
HARBOUR KIOSK

Festival Finalist
• Harbour Kiosk is the first
kinetic public architecture in
Hong Kong
• It is designed by LAAB
Architects for the Avenue of
Stars
• It is located at the Tsim Sha
Tsui harbourfront that also
marks the entrance to the
Avenue of Stars
• Harbour Kiosk pays tribute to
the many generations of Hong
Kong movie industry while
subtly expressing its own
Hong Kongness through its
locally-inspired, transformable
architecture.
Inspiration
• The form was inspired by the local market
stalls in Hong Kong, which expand and
engage with the public when they are
open and return to their compact and
secured form when they are closed
• Harbour Kiosk automatically transforms
its “gate” into “awning” during the day and
returns to its compact shape at night.
Robotic Arms
• The robotic movement of Harbour Kiosk
also resonates with the movement of
harbour waves and pays tribute to the
moving images of cinema.
• There are 49 robotic arms behind the
profiled timber fins. Timber Fin

INTERMEDIATE STAGE
Features
• The original brief only asked LAAB to design a
10-square-meter food kiosk.
• However, as a food kiosk in the public space,
LAAB Architects believe that it also has the
mission to serve the public.
• To achieve its public services, LAAB merged
the food kiosk with a large M&E machine room
nearby and gained a 17-meter long wall space
to accommodate public functions, including a
counter table, a vending machine, drinking
fountains, info panels, and planters.
• Harbour Kiosk also provides water and
electricity for the Avenue of stars and contains
all the server panels and a stereo system for
the light show that happens every night at 8
pm.

Materials study
• The facade features three strata of profiled
timber slats, which not only conceal the
machine room doors but also accommodate
different types of public functions inside the
wavy surfaces.
• They also create dynamic flow around the
kiosk façade, which results in the subtle
changes of profiles
• Tapering makes the member appear slender
and less massive.
• PEFC-certified red balau wood was used as
a sustainable facade material because of its
strength, hardness, lightness, and cost-
effectiveness.
• They were treated with exterior grade oil finish
for better durability against UV and termites.
• The length and profile of each timber fin were
precisely made with digital fabrication and local
craftsmanship

Cafe
• A cafe is a type of restaurant which
typically serves coffee and tea, in
addition to light refreshments such as
baked goods or snacks.
• It is sometimes called a coffeehouse
or a coffee shop or tea shop.
• A cafe menu traditionally offers things
such as coffee, espresso, pastries,
and sandwiches.
• Cafes originated in Europe and are
strongly associated with France.
• They are known for their casual,
unhurried atmosphere.
THINK OF IT CAFE
Introduction
• Location -
▪ City: Surat
▪ Country: India
▪ Architects- Studio Lagom
▪ Area- 3500 ft²
▪ Year- 2018
• When the clients approached the
architect to design a
cafe/restaurant, the design
thoughts immediately veered to
creating something that the city of
Surat lacked which was a well-
designed garden cafe/restaurant
• A design that kept the built-form to
the minimum and used economic
materials to rationalise project
costs was adopted.
• The visual aesthetic within is
organic and free-flowing, with
materials, colours and forms that
are grounded to the earth.
Features
• Beyond the wall, the entry was
orchestrated through a lobby-
like enclosed space (abutted
by a waterbody) that ‘releases’
you into the restaurant proper,
with an open courtyard nestling
within an L-shaped semi-
enclosed area.
• The seating options range
from the al fresco to ones with
varying degrees of semi-
openness.
• Immediately bordering the
courtyard void are smooth
cement ‘benches’ created
in situ.
• While to one side of
the entrance lobby is a
section shielded by a slim
undulating
ferrocement wall with cut-
outs — more screen than
wall — to the other is an
open section, both are
roofed by corrugated GI
sheets whose edges are
cut such that they,
collectively, reinforce the
organic look and feel.
• The colour scheme is
a predominance of an
earthy red, with a dash
of blue at the
entrance and
materials like leftover
stone arranged in a
homely mosaic,
smooth swells of
cement and MS are
aligned to a rustic
look.
• Overhead
salvaged construction iron
rods form an undulating
installation, almost like
a heavily contoured site
manifested as a wire-frame
drawing.
• Its shadows create a
rippled effect on the
floor, distorting views
and adding more dynamism
to the vistas.
• Trees like frangipani, heliconia,
dracaena, bamboo, banana,
bougainvillea, and many more are
planted which give the restaurant
natural freshness.
• At the borders of the courtyard, a
small bed in planted to create lush
natural look.

Food Trucks
• A food truck is a large motorized vehicle
or trailer, equipped to cook, prepare,
serve, and sell food.
• Some, including ice cream trucks, sell
frozen or prepackaged food; others have
on-board kitchens and prepare food from
scratch, or they heat up food that was
prepared in a bricks and mortar
commercial kitchen.
• A food truck is a great way to get started
in the restaurant business.
• It is a pretty low investment, compared to
opening a brand new restaurant, and
offers plenty of other perks such as low
overhead and small payroll.
• Most food trucks take advantage of free
advertising and marketing through social
media sites such as Facebook, Twitter,
and even Pinterest.
