What I Need to Know

There were questions as to whether it was, in fact “true art” since it made use
of electronic and mechanical devices, rather than the artist’s own hand to produce
the images and effects. Within a few years, however, there was a general acceptance
of digital art as an exciting and thought-provoking form of modern art. Today, people
are more involved in taking pictures – selfie, groupie, formal or informal, editing
pictures and uploading in different social media platforms. In fact, people are
generating income in a very creative presentation of their arts through digital ways.
This module focuses on:
• Lesson 2-Digital Photography

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Discusses the concept that technology is an effective and vibrant tool for
empowering a person to express his/her ideals, goals, and advocacies, which
elicits immediate action;
2. Explains the role or function of artworks by evaluating their utilization and
combination of art elements and principles;
3. Uses artworks to derive the traditions of a community; and
4. Compares the characteristics of artworks in the 21st century

What’s In

Directions: Identify what is being asked. Write your answers in a sheet of

paper.

1. It is a computer generated or manipulated visual arts.

2. A fast and fun way to share images with others; snap a photo, choose
from among the available filters, and share via Facebook, Twitter,
Tumblr, and more.

3. It is used in photography to give the illusion that something is

different in size, but still makes the photo fit together.

4. It is an online photo editing tool that provides filters.

5. An application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images

in art.

What’s New

Another means of generating an original image is to capture it first as a digital

file. In the case of today’s electronic technology, that would mean recording the image
using a digital camera or a device with a built-in camera, like your mobile phone,
android device or tablet.
This lesson discusses digital photography, the parts and the basic functions
of camera prevalently used to capture images. The lesson needs thorough
understanding especially on the seven basic elements of photography that a
photographer can used to make a perfect shot.

3
What is It

Digital camera is a camera that captures photographs in digital memory.

It can display images on a screen immediately after being recorded. It also stores
and delete images from memory. Many digital cameras can also record moving
videos with sound.

Cameras come in many shapes and sizes, and each is used for a variety of
needs. There are, however, two main types of cameras available today for
the general consumer: the DSLR and the point and shoot.

Point and shoot cameras mean just that: point the camera at something
and shoot a picture. It automatically makes all the adjustments in lighting, focus,
zoom-in and zoom-out and even removal of ‘red-eye’ with the user.

DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex and refer to how the light enters
the camera. This provides film-less and instant review features on the point-and-
shoot type of digital camera.

4
Parts of a Camera Functions
1. Lens The lens is one of the
most vital parts of a
camera, where light
enters through the lens,
and this where the photo
process begins. This can
be either fixed
permanently or
interchangeable. Also
vary in focal length, its
aperture and other
details.

2. Viewfinder The viewfinder is the

area on the camera that
you look through in order
to compose your shot.

3. Mode Dial The mode dial allows you

to select different options,
such as automatic mode,

program mode, sports
mode or macro mode.

4.Flash The flash can be

during dim, low light
situations.

on the camera that is
used to snap the picture.
It opens and closes the
shutter, allowing the
necessary light and
information to enter the
camera.

or power off the camera. When
the power of the camera is left on
for a prolonged period, it
switches automatically to the
standby mode to conserve
power.

8. Cross Key/Multi-Controller Key The cross key or multi-controller

keys are directional buttons that
allow you to move between menu
items, move a magnified display
to a different point during image
playback.

9. LCD Display The LCD screen is found on the
back of the body and can vary in
size. For digital compact
cameras, the LCD has typically
replaced the viewfinder c
completely. For digital single
lens reflex cameras, the LCD is
mainly for viewing photos after
shooting.

Elements and Principles of Photography

11
Sometimes what we feel are the smaller elements in our pictures are actually
what makes the picture interesting. Photographers have a conscious or sometimes
subconscious impulse to adhere to or break the rules that create visual harmony in
their photographs.

• Line – Can be vertical, horizontal, curved or jagged. Examples:

roads, sunsets, bridges.
• Shape – Two-dimensional representation of objects. Examples:
silhouetted photographs of birds.
• Form – Three-dimensional representation of objects, usually
using lighting and shadows.
• Texture – The use of lighting to bring out details of an object,
making it easy to see whether a surface is smooth or soft.
• Pattern – The use of repetition to create an interesting photo.
Examples: photos of gardens or flowers.
• Color – Using warm or cool colors to set a mood.
• Space – Either negative or positive space can be used to make a
statement. Often seen when using the rule of thirds.

The Rule of Thirds

The best way to illustrate one of the most popular photography composition
techniques, the rule of thirds, is to put a nine-square grid over a photo. You would
break an image into thirds both horizontally and vertically, arriving at nine segments
total. If you place the most interesting element of your photos along one of those

12
lines, your photo will naturally be well-composed, based on the general rules of form
photography.
