2. Promotes development of the child

It also helps in the development of cognitive functions like

memory, attention etc and motor functions like buttoning
clothes, turning pages, eating etc. It also promotes faster
weight gain by the baby.

3. Improves immune system

It helps in improving the immune system of the infant. The

skin to skin contact of the infant with the infant promotes
the immune system of the baby.

4. Improves sleep

It can help your baby have a deep sleep. Deep sleep is an

attribute of infants, but sometimes their sleep does get
disturbed. With the help of kangaroo care you can help the
baby achieve deep sleep.

5. Increases the bond between parents and infant

It helps in enhancing the bond between the parents and the

3
child. This can lead to reduced stress and anxiety for the
baby and therefore less crying.

6. It helps in soothing the infant’s feelings

You can sooth your baby with kangaroo care as infants

find the mother’s heartbeat soothing. If you have a fussy
baby, you can try kangaroo care to sooth it.

7. Enhanced sensitivity of the mother towards the

infant

It leads to enhanced sensitivity of the mother towards the

infant. New mothers usually lack in sensitivity to the child.
This is mostly because of a lack of attachment with the
baby. They are also not accustomed with the ways of
nurturing a child. Initially, she may not even feel inclined
to get involved in all the chores of caring for a child. If the
mother as well as the father undergoes few sessions of
kangaroo care with the baby, they can develop a enhanced
sensitivity towards the baby.

4
8. Inspires confidence in new mothers

It also inspires new mothers to take care of their children

on their own. They get the confidence to handle the chores
themselves. So they may need to stay in the hospital for a
shorter duration.

9. Abates production of breast milk

A big benefit of kangaroo care is that it helps in the

production of breast milk. In fact, new mothers often face
difficulty in production of breast milk. With few sessions
of kangaroo care with your child, your chances of
producing breast milk increases many fold.

10. Helps with breastfeeding

New mothers are not at all experienced with breastfeeding.

They do experience a lot of difficulties in trying to
breastfeed their children. This happens even if there is no
problem with production of milk. However, if you undergo

5
few sessions of kangaroo care, you are more likely to
succeed in breastfeeding your child in first few attempts.
This is mostly because of the fact that you grow enhanced
sensitivity towards the infant.

What is KMC
procedure
The baby should be placed between the mother’s breasts in Lecture cum
an upright position. discussion
4. To explain about 15  The head should be turned to one side and in a
KMC procedure min slightly upturned position. This position helps in
breathing of and allows eye-to-eye contact between Black board,
the mother and her baby. ppt
 The legs and arms should be folded.
 Baby’s abdomen should be at the level of the
mother’s upper abdomen.
 Support the baby bottom with a sling/binder.

Feeding

 Holding the baby near the breast stimulates milk

production.
 Mother should express milk while the baby is still
in KMC position.
 The baby could be fed with paladai, cup, spoon or
tube, depending on the condition of the baby.

6
Privacy

 KMC requires some exposure on the part of the

mother. This can make her nervous and could be
de-motivating. So mother should be provided some
privacy for practicing KMC.

Duration for which KMC should be practiced

 To begin with, it may not be possible for the

mother to provide KMC for a prolonged period of
time. But each session of KMC should last at least
an hour. The aim should be to provide KMC as
long as possible preferably 24 hours a day.

Can the mother continue KMC during sleep and

resting?

 Using a comfortable chair or several pillows on an

ordinary bed KMC can be provided during sleep
and rest.

When should KMC be discontinued?

 Babies love receiving KMC after going home.

When the mother and baby are comfortable, KMC
continues for as long as possible, first at the
hospital then at home until the weight is 2500 g. By
this time, the baby starts wriggling to show that she

7
is uncomfortable, pulls her limbs out, cries and
fusses every time the mother tries to put her back
skin to skin.

Post-discharge follow-up

 After discharge baby should be taken to the

hospital as and when advised by doctor/nurse.
