READINGS FOR WOTL JULY 2022 & SEPT. 06 EC

FIRST READING
Isaiah 54: 8-10
In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will
have compassion on you," says the LORD your Redeemer.  9 "To me this is like the days of
Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have
sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again. 10 Though the mountains be
shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my
covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

RESPOSORIAL PSALM 25:7b

“Remember me according to Your faithfulness, For Your goodness’ sake, Lord.”

PSALM 65: 1-3, 4-5, 8-9, 11-13

Praise awaits[b] you, our God, in Zion;
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.

You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.

When we were overwhelmed by sins,
    you forgave[c] our transgressions.
“Remember me according to Your faithfulness, For Your goodness’ sake, Lord.”

Blessed are those you choose
    and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
    of your holy temple.

You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
    God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas,
“Remember me according to Your faithfulness, For Your goodness’ sake, Lord.”

The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.

You care for the land and water it;
    you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,
    for so you have ordained it.[d]
“Remember me according to Your faithfulness, For Your goodness’ sake, Lord.”
11
You crown the year with your bounty,
    and your carts overflow with abundance.
12
The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;
    the hills are clothed with gladness.

13
The meadows are covered with flocks
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;
    they shout for joy and sing.
“Remember me according to Your faithfulness, For Your goodness’ sake, Lord.”

2nd Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10 (NIV)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you
followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is
now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one
time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest,
we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich
in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace
you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the
heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the
incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by
grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Gospel: Matthew 5:40-48 (NIV)

And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone
40

forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not
turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. 43 “You have heard that it was said,
‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his
sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If
you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing
that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not
even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
