Characteristics of traditional and new music

Traditional folk music had these characteristics from a historical

perspective.

 It has been transmitted through oral tradition. Before the 20th century,
ordinary people were usually  illiterate; they had acquired songs by
memorizing them. In the first place, this was not mediated by books
or recorded or transmitted media. Singers may extend their repertoire
through the use of broadsheets or songbooks, but these secondary
enhancements are of the same character as the primary songs
experienced in the flesh.

 Music has often been related to national culture. It was culturally

specific; it came from a particular region or culture. Folk music has an
extra dimension to social cohesion in the context of an immigrant
group.

characteristics of new music

 New music is a genre that encompasses a number of pop-oriented

music styles popular in the late 1970s and 1980s. It's rooted in punk
rock in the mid-1970s. New wave moved away from traditional blues
and rock and roll sounds to create pop and rock music that
included disco, mod and electronic music. It generated subgenres
and fusions, including synth-pop.

 New music differs from other movements with ties to first-wave punk,

as it displays characteristics  common to pop music rather than more
"artsy" post-punk music. Although it incorporates much  of the original
punk rock sound and ethos, the new wave is more complex in both
music and lyrics.  Common features of new wave music include the
use of synthesizers and electronic productions, and the distinctive
visual style of music videos and fashion.
