Question set C:

1. Consider that alcohol has various effects on the brain and impacts many different
parts of the body, including the brain. What are some of the consequences of
consuming large amounts of alcohol on the brain? What are some of the
consequences of consuming low amounts of alcohol of the brain? How would
awareness of this fact change drinking behaviour? Why do you think this way?

Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to the brain. When a person continuously

consumes alcohol, they claim to be happier, less stressed, and more relaxed. Alcohol
triggers the release of endorphins that bind to opiate receptors in the brain, causing the
pleasurable effect. However, the feel-good effect is not good for the brain because it
affects the functioning of the brain lobes as well as the central nervous system. For that
reason, most people have lost motor skills, sensory abilities, sluggish speech, and
blurred vision or hearing. Alcoholics should be aware of these negative effects of
alcohol on the brain because they will limit their consumption rates and avoid the risks.

2. What do you think would be the benefits and consequences of a drug that
increased alcohol dehydrogenase? How do you think people would use this
drug? How might the advent of this drug be concerning?

Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs)are drugs/chemicals that contain enzymes that oxidate

and eliminate ethanol content in alcohol. They are beneficial because they help convert
alcohol into simpler compounds. However, the conversion is dangerous because the
simple compound ‘acetaldehyde’ is toxic; it causes nausea, rapid heart rate, and flushed
face.
