Theme-based learning is one of the major shifts in education as well as in the

whole curriculum. Unlike the traditional way of teaching which mainly focuses on the
subject itself –theme-based learning administers the use of different themes and use
these theme to incorporate teaching-learning activities.

If you notice, it was very popular among kindergarten and primary school.
Taken for example, when learning about Philippine national heroes, we incorporate the
theme of “Philippine Currency”. This strategy in teaching and learning does not focus
solely on the topic –it is universal and multidisciplinary which makes it a good choice
as teaching strategy.

In the Basic Education Curriculum of the Philippines, theme-based learning is

already incorporated which is why our fellow students among the grades K-12 have
final outputs called Thematic Output. It is an output based on a theme which
incorporates the learning of the students on not only one subject but to multiple
subjects. It does not only focus on the cognitive development of students but also to
their affective and psychomotor development –and this is one of the strengths of theme-
based learning as it develops holistic learning.

Theme-based learning also helps in developing high-order thinking skills –which

are critical thinking, creative thinking, collaborative thinking, design thinking, and etc.
Learning is also individualized according to the needs of the students as it fosters
holistic learning. Their learning is also not just for classroom settings but also for
community-based settings –meaning their learning are life-long.
