Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
Your shirt was made in China and your mobile comes from Japan. You can eat at McDonald's in
Moscow and watch an American film in Rome. Advances in technology such as mobile phones,
aeroplanes, telephones and the Internet have made the growth of transport and communication networks
possible. Amongst other things, this means that people and countries can exchange information and goods
more quickly and in a less complicated way in a process called globalisation. But what are the downsides
of the global market? And how will it affect jobs in the future?
Globalisation means we have access to more goods and at more affordable prices, but it comes at a
cost. When a company moves production to an economically disadvantaged country because of the lower
costs involved, people in industrialised nations lose their jobs. Meanwhile, workers in places such as
Bangladesh and China earn low salaries and their working conditions are often poor.
What’s more, globalisation causes ecological problems. The number of planes, ships and lorries that
are used to transport goods from one country to another is constantly on the increase, which means more
carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. That in turn, leads to global warming. The good news is
that consumers are becoming more aware of the issues, especially when it comes to how products are
made. Increasingly, companies are being pressurised to improve ethical standards.
(Adapted from Gateway by David Spencer and Gill Holley)
Question 31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Working conditions in different countries B. The effects of modern technology

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Go for a walk around the small town of Hainsbury and take a stroll in the park. You’ll hear the chatter
of children and see parents pushing prams. You’ll see an ice-cream kiosk, swings, roundabouts and other
attractions for kids. A typical small-town scene, you might say. However, you may be pleasantly surprised
by how clean everything is. Not a scrap of litter in sight. The people of Hainsbury are undoubtedly good
citizens. However, the real answer to this question can be found at the nearby primary school by speaking
to a small group of ten-year-olds.
The children from the school took part in a new project early this year that was very effective in making
them aware of problems connected with the environment and in grabbing their attention about the issues
involved. Although in some ways lessons were traditional, in the sense that the pupils were taught about
how to recycle and about materials such as plastic, glass, aluminium and paper, the project also really
encouraged them to take an active part in the learning process.
A good initiative you may say to yourself, but it did not end there. The pupils were so enthusiastic
about what they learnt, that they arranged to meet after school to tidy up their local park. Considering its
size, it was seen to be a realistic task. "Although we like to play there a lot, especially at weekends," said
David, one of the schoolchildren, "we thought it was a good idea to clean up all the mess." To the
amazement of their parents, they spent the whole of an afternoon cleaning up the area.
After this first experiment, the children agreed to meet once a week to clean up a specific area of the
town. News spread fast and soon others started getting involved and came to help the youngsters in their
task of cleaning up the town. Now, every Sunday afternoon if you look hard enough, you'll find a sizeable
group of people frantically filling up bags with unwanted odds and ends.
In a world where we are bombarded with warnings about damaging the environment, it is surprising
that there are not more projects of this kind. We need to replace apathy with a desire for action, and these
children certainly provide a shining example.
(Adapted from Change Up by Shirley Ann Hill and Michael Lacey Freeman)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 5.
Several times a week, teenager Karina Moore trains at her local pool to jump from the high-diving
board into the water – in an attempt to become a national diving champion. Karina first learned about
diving during a family break in Spain, where the resort's pool had a high-diving board. Young people
were diving off it, and it looked fun, but Karina didn't join in, even though she was a strong swimmer.
Then after returning home, she discovered a long-distance runner she'd always admired had started diving
for relaxation – so she became more interested.
Karina joined a beginners' diving class at her local pool. They had several sessions jumping onto soft
materials before trying the high board. In Karina's area, there's now lots of interest in high diving, but it's
sometimes difficult for swimmers to find suitable practice facilities. Although the pools are deep enough,
they're in use so often by diving clubs that other people don't get opportunities to practise. Fortunately,
though, Karina's coach noticed her talent and helped her develop her techniques. After only two years,
she's winning competitions in her area.
But what's it like to concentrate so much on diving? 'I train 20 hours a week' says Karina, and I won't
pretend it's easy – you have to enjoy it to spend so much time doing it! It's not easy for my parents either,
though – they drive me to training sessions early in the morning, and that costs money. But they've had
financial help from sports organisations, luckily. And my schoolwork and social life are good. I still meet
my mates – and there's always the phone! The only thing I hadn't realised was that the pool water would
damage my hair – I used to love my long hair, but I've had to cut it short because it looked awful! But I'll
definitely keep on diving!'

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 12.
The majority of people think that their dream job is too hard to achieve, too competitive and believe
that it is all a matter of luck. All this is true actually, but why should that stop anyone from trying to get
the job they really want? A really determined person will always succeed and, in many ways, needs other
people to give up trying so that he or she can succeed.
Many job seekers feel limited by the choices they made at college or university. They may think that
because they studied marketing, all they can ever do is work in marketing. All the evidence shows that,
in fact, employers are less interested in acquired knowledge than the ability to think and learn. It is also
very difficult to predict the needs of society. The needs of employers and the economy can change very
quickly, and often unexpectedly.
Of course, if it is a very tough time economically, it is hard to find employment straight after university,
but it is by no means impossible. It might take several months longer to find a job after graduating, but
there is work out there. My chosen career has always been competitive, but I never thought about the
other people going for the same jobs. It may be human nature to compare your progress to your peers, but
perhaps the best advice would be to try not to. Be focused on what you want and how you are going to
get it. After all, it may appear that a friend who has a really well-paid job is doing well, but how do you
know what their job is actually like? They may be working 12-hour days, have an unreasonable boss, or
be stressed out trying to meet unrealistic targets.
Have a plan in place, even if it is a sketchy one. Have both short-term and long-term aims. In my final
year at university, my short-term aims were to gain experience at a local newspaper. My long-term aim
was always to get a job at a national paper. It sounds easy for me to say it now, but I always thought that
with really hard work, dedication, a willingness to put myself out and a bit of luck, I could get my dream
job. A really key piece of advice is never get downhearted by rejection, because there will probably be
a lot. You can achieve your dream job, whatever it is. You must never give up. Be prepared to work hard
and for long hours without necessarily climbing up the career ladder. There is a lot to be said for learning
your 'trade' from the bottom up. At the start, there will probably be little money, but it will be worth it in
the end. The best jobs are not supposed to be easy - that is what makes them challenging. And if you like
a challenge, just keep your head down and go for it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 5.
Deaf people should enjoy a play as much as the hearing audience. This is the thinking behind the
Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires that theatres become accessible to deaf people. Theatre
producers, on the other hand, are beginning to realise that such a feature makes their product attractive to
a wider audience - with considerable financial rewards.
Interpreted theatre usually takes place at two or three performances in a theatre season. Preference for
tickets is given to the deaf and their guests, but tickets are also sold to hearing people who are interested
in seeing theatre interpreters at work. It is a colossal project for the interpreters. Ian Cox works for
SeeTheatre, a Chicago-based association of interpreters. He says, "for about a month we work with the
support of a Sign Language consultant to translate and rehearse an entire play. The workload is immense.
Consider that each actor in the play has about four weeks to rehearse his or her lines; we have to learn the
whole play in as much time. And, when interpreting musicals, where timing, rhythm and harmonies must
be practised, the workload doubles."
The most important technical aspect of theatre interpretation for the deaf is the location of the
interpreter. Placement strategies can be categorised into three styles: ‘placed’, where interpreters are
located outside the acting space and do not move; ‘zoned’, where interpreters are within the acting space,
but usually move only during a change of scene or act; and, finally, ‘shadowed’, where interpreters move
freely within the acting space, shadowing the movement of the actors for whom they are interpreting.
(Adapted from Upstream by Virginia Evans and Bob Obee)

Question 3. According to paragraph 2, what can NOT be said about interpreted theatre?
A. Those with hearing impairments are prioritized when it comes to ticket reservations.
B. It appeals to people who like to see sign-language translators at work.
C. Each project presents a mammoth challenge for the interpreter.
D. It takes place in most theatre performances during the production season.
Question 4. The word ‘they’ in paragraph 3 refers to ________

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 12.
Scientists estimate that throughout the course of Earth's history, more than a billion different species
of animals and insects have existed. Today, there are only about 30-50 million species left, according to
the World Animal Foundation. That means that for every species living on Earth today, 20 more are
already extinct. Scientists study extinct species to get a better understanding of the past. In addition to
studying what these species might have been like when they were alive, some scientists are interested in
the possibility of seeing some of them walk the Earth again.
There are a number of serious proposals to try to revive extinct species. Some animals on this list
include: the woolly mammoth, the moa, the thylacine, and the bucardo. These animals had very little in
common and in most cases lived eras apart.
Scientists have proposed reviving an extinct species using two possible methods. In the first method,
sex cells (sperm or eggs) are obtained from the extinct animal and are used to fertilize sex cells of a closely
related living relative in a laboratory. The second method involves a type of cloning. For example, sperm
from a woolly mammoth could be used to fertilize an egg from a modern-day elephant. The fertilized egg
would then be placed in the live female elephant where it would live and grow until it is ready to be born.
In cloning, the DNA of one individual replaces the DNA of another. In the woolly mammoth, for example,
scientists could inject DNA from a mammoth into an egg cell from an elephant. The cloned egg cell would
then be placed into a living elephant and allowed to develop in the same way as a fertilized egg.
But some scientists believe species revival will never happen because both methods are problematic.
One of the major challenges is how to obtain enough high-quality DNA from an extinct species to conduct
an experiment. While it is theoretically possible under ideal conditions to preserve genetic material for
thousands of years, these conditions rarely occur in real life. And there is a final, ethical consideration.
Even if we learn how to reproduce an example of an extinct species, that individual could never have a
normal life. Its natural environment is most likely gone and. it would have no parents to show it how to
behave as a member of its species. So the animal would remain a curiosity and probably live out its life
in a zoo. People question whether it would be ethical to revive one of nature's creatures for such a purpose.
Only time will tell if scientists manage to carry out their ambitious plans. Even if they manage to
overcome the scientific problems, they may face opposition from governments or society. Some even feel
it might be more worthwhile for us to focus our efforts on conservation and take care of existing species,
so they don't also go the way of the woolly mammoth.
(Adapted from Active Skills for Reading by Heinle)

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
The debate in the USA about whether to start school later has been running for many years. Ask any
American teenagers arriving at school at 7.30 a.m. and they will tell you that it's difficult to memorise
chemical formulae or lists of vocabulary so early in the morning. Is it just laziness, or is there a biological
reason for this? Studies by scientists in the UK show that teenagers naturally want to go to bed about two
hours later than adults and also get up later. This trend begins at about the age of thirteen and continues
right through the teenage years.
Schools in some US states have tested this theory, and the findings back up the science. By delaying
the start of school by just one hour, academic achievement has risen, absenteeism has declined and cases
of depression among teenagers have also fallen.
However, not everyone advocates changing the school timetable. They claim that it would cause a
huge amount of disruption. Others are opposed to the change because students won't have time for after-
school activities or part-time jobs. More studies need to be carried out before a definite link can be made
between the number of accidents and the school start times, but it is undeniable that it is less safe to drive
when you feel sleepy.
(Adapted from Solutions by Tim Falla and Paul A Davies)
Question 39. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. A flexible school timetable B. Time to start school
C. Benefits of getting up late D. Teenagers’ sleeping patterns
Question 40. The word they in paragraph 1 refers to ______.
A. teenagers B. scientists C. lists D. years

A. They are very lazy.
B. They don’t like the idea of learning vocabulary in the morning.
C. At the age of thirteen, they start to get up earlier.
D. They tend to stay up late.
Question 42. As stated in paragraph 2, what have some schools in the US found by delaying the time to
start school?
A. Some children have started to exhibit signs of depression.
B. Only good students have achieved excellent results.
C. The number of students attending school has increased.
D. Some teenagers have missed lessons because of sleepiness.
Question 43. The word advocates in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. builds B. supports C. denies D. shows

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Everyone knows how important it is to educate the world’s children. But is the world really doing
enough to educate its youth, or are we letting young people down by failing to provide opportunities to
learn? On the plus side, it seems that access to education is better than it was. In 2008, UNESCO, the
United Nations organization that focuses on education, carried out research which was largely
encouraging. They published figures to show that, overall, since the 1970s, there has been a considerable
rise in school attendance in both primary and secondary schools across the world.
Unfortunately, these generally positive statistics can’t hide the fact that a worrying number of young
people are still not getting the educational opportunities they should. Recent UNESCO figures show that
almost 60 million children of primary school age don’t attend school at all, which is about ten per cent of
the world’s population. In parts of sub-Saharan Africa and south and west Asia, the young children who
are privileged enough to receive any schooling at all are in a minority. There are a lot of factors that stop
children from getting an education. For example, if a country is at war or going through a period of
political problems, school attendance will inevitably drop.
Economic factors are also a key reason why children don’t go to school. According to UNESCO
figures, 215 million children are already working and their incomes are often essential for their families.
Sometimes, cultural and religious factors may prohibit girls from getting a good education, but, more
often than not, the reasons are economic. It is reasonable to ask what relevance education has for children
and their families in poverty-stricken countries. For people living in remote communities, bringing up
children in harsh conditions and often relying on subsistence farming to survive, education may not seem
important.
Education is vital to people who live in countries in the developing world, where incomes and
opportunities are low. In the next few decades, jobs in technology and communications, which require
literacy and numeracy skills, will replace manual jobs more and more. Experts estimate that every
additional year of education will increase the income of a person in a poor country by ten per cent. And
educated people don’t just make money for themselves – they are the entrepreneurs and the inventors
who, in the future, are going to create jobs and wealth for other people.

correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 5.
Monopoly is one of the biggest-selling games in the world. It is sold in 80 countries and comes in 26
different languages. But where did this classic board game come from, and why did it become so popular?
At the beginning of the 20th century, an instructional game called ‘The Landlord's Game’ was first
published by a political activist, Elizabeth Magie. The purpose of the game was to teach people how rich,
powerful individuals take advantage of the poor while they accumulate even more wealth. Unfortunately,
the game was not popular, and she sold very few copies of it.
In 1934, a man called Charles Darrow redesigned it, creating a game of chance. However, when he
presented his game, which he called "Monopoly, '' to the games manufacturers Parker Brothers, they
rejected it. They said it was too complex and contained too many flaws.
Darrow persisted and decided to produce the game himself. He created and sold over 5,000 handmade
sets to a local department store. The game had immense public appeal, and was so popular that Darrow
went back to Parker Brothers, who bought the rights to the game.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 12.
Timothy Scott was leisurely leafing through a local newspaper when he saw a small advert for a
'concrete reservoir for sale'. A few months later, along with his wife, Sarah, he is about to become one of
the few Brits who live below the earth. The couple, known locally as the moles', have decided to go
underground not just because they want one of the most unusual homes in Britain, but for good ecological
reasons too.
The first time the couple climbed down a dangerous old iron ladder to inspect the inside of the reservoir,
they expected to descend into metres of mud and water. Instead, they found a sweet-smelling 10m by 20m
space, 4m high. The massive concrete roof, and the earth above it, was supported by eight large original
brick pillars. ‘We knew immediately that it would make a wonderful home,’ says Timethy. The couple
have since used a special drill to cut three large square holes in the roof, which will soon support three
glass pyramids. These will be the main source of light and heat for the house. Natural light will spread
through glass walls to the three bedrooms, two bathrooms and kitchen off the central area.
“We expect virtually no heating bills,” Timothy says. “The surrounding earth and the inside of the
walls should provide an ample storage area for the solar energy we gain through the pyramids during the
day. The light coming in through them should create interesting lighting effects in the central living area
- and reduce the need for artificial light. We estimate that this will cut our electricity bills by at least a
third.”
Living underground, which is quite common in America, in parts of Spain and in China, has many
advantages for families. A considerable amount of money is saved on energy and maintenance bills, and
earth-sheltered homes are free from most forms of noise and have a low fire risk. What's more, they are
naturally protected from wind and draughts. Earth sheltering also provides greater security and at the same
time a building that will last a good 500 years. Building this way is also compatible with the new
conservationist methods. Society is going to have to look at energy usage, and underground homes can
be space-saving in a crowded country. To avoid living in 'shoe boxes' and to keep agricultural land green,
there is really only one way of building: underground.
However, according to Peter Carpentier, secretary of the British Earth Sheltering Association, who
lives in his own underground home, there are a few disadvantages. For instance, because there are so few
earth-sheltered homes in the UK, it is usually hard, although not impossible, to get planning permission.
When a lot of excavation is needed, building costs can be higher than for conventional homes, although
savings can be made in other ways.
(Adapted from Upstream by Virginia Evans and Bob Obee)
Question 6. Which best serves as the title for the passage?
A. Choosing Homes for a Better Life!

answer to each of the questions from 1 to 5.
Since the 19th century, companies have looked for better and cleaner ways of creating electricity.
One UK company has created a special type of floor made of square tiles. Under each square, there is a
system that can create electricity very cheaply when someone steps on it!
The design of the floor works very well when it is used in very busy areas. And the reason is that
a lot of energy is created simply because of the large numbers of people walking across the floor.
The floor can have other uses too; one of them is to record how many people visit a shopping
centre. This kind of information is very useful for shop owners because very often they want to know at
which times of days they have the highest numbers of customers, so the next time you visit shopping
centre, have a careful look at the floor that you are walking across!

Today, text-messaging has probably become young people’s most common form of communication.
Some teachers think that because of this, young people are not writing correctly at school. They fear that
once students get used to it, they will find it hard to switch back to using correct grammar and spelling.
How did things begin this way?
It all began with e-mail, online chat rooms, and games. Then step by step young people made sentences,
phrases and words shorter. As text-messaging continued to become popular, people invented more and
more words. Today, it is like a real language with its own grammar and vocabulary. The growth of text-

messaging has raised an important question: As students become fluent in text messaging, do their writing
skills suffer?
People have different ideas about the effects of text-messaging on students’ writing skills. Some
say that students are losing the ability to write long, correct sentences. Others say that text-messaging is
having a good effect on the language students use in then schoolwork. It shows that they are creative and
good at expressing themselves. And if students can keep the two systems separate - one for text messaging
and one for school - this will help students appreciate reading and writing more.
Some people suggest that one way to reduce the bad effects of text-messaging is to find ways to
use technology as a positive learning tool. For example, students can be allowed to type their assignments
in a cell phone message and send them to their teachers, but they must type correctly. In this way, students
are using the technology that they are familiar with to communicate in a form of language suitable for
schoolwork. It shows students that text-messaging is fine for social communication, but correct grammar
and spelling are necessary for communication in school.
