Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 38.
Children essentially learn how the sounds in a language go together to make meaning. (34) ______,
they learn that the sounds m-ah-m-ee refer to the “being” who cuddles and feeds them, their mommy.
This is a significant step because everything we say is really just a stream of sounds. To make (35)
______ of those sounds, a child must be able to recognize where one word ends and another one begins.
These are called “word boundaries.”
However, children are not learning words, exactly. They are actually learning morphemes, (36)
______ are the smallest, discrete chunks words can be broken into. A morpheme may be a word on its
own or may be combined with other morphemes to form a word. So in “mommy,” there are two
morphemes: “ma” and “mee.”
Help your child build their language skills by reading to them often. And of course, keep having
child-centric conversations with them as studies show that babies learn language best within a social
context. (37) ______ way to encourage their communication and social skills is to mimic their noises
(such as their babbling) and say them back to them. You can also mirror their facial (38) ______ and
describe their actions as well as narrate what is happening around them.

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
The modern study of earth sciences looks at the planet as a large, complex network of physical,
chemical, and biological interactions. This is known as a systems approach to the study of Earth. The
systems approach treats Earth as a combination of several subsystems, each of which can be viewed
individually or in concert with the others. These subsystems are the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere,
and biosphere.
The geosphere is that part of the solid earth on which people live and from which are extracted the
materials that make up our world: minerals and rocks as well as the organic products of the soil. In the
latter area, the geosphere overlaps with the biosphere, the province of all living and recently living things;
in fact, once a formerly living organism has decomposed and become part of the soil, it is no longer part
of the biosphere and has become a component of the geosphere.
Overlap occurs between all spheres in one way or another. Thus, the hydrosphere includes all of the
planet’s waters, except for water that has entered the atmosphere in the form of evaporation. From the
time moisture is introduced to the blanket of gases that surrounds the planet until it returns to the solid
earth in the form of precipitation, water is a part of the atmosphere. This aspect of the planet’s water is
treated in the essay on Evapotranspiration and Precipitation.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
The scientists recruited dog owners worldwide via social media, then asked them to play fetch with
their dogs daily in their homes while repeating the name of the toy, a process that lasted three months.
Once a month, with a scientist present, the owners tested the dogs—the study participants included
both adults and puppies—by asking the canine to retrieve one of two toys by name. Dogs that succeeded
were then given a new toy and new name to learn.
Despite the intensive training, only Oliva learned to match a single word to a toy—in fact, she
learned 21 names in two months, though she died from health issues she’d suffered since a puppy before
she could be tested further.
“None of the breeds learned a thing. It was such a surprise,” Fugazza says. To verify the study design
worked, the scientists also tested six border collies that could already retrieve some toys by name; as
predicted, all six of those control dogs learned additional names.
It’s interesting that 18 of the 33 dogs that failed the test were also border collies, Fugazza points out,
showing that the breed isn’t always high performing. Because such individual variation in intelligence
also occurs in people, dogs could provide insight into what makes an animal gifted and talented, she says.
“A handful of talented people have changed the course of history,” she says. “Why are there so few
Mozarts and Einsteins? Is it genetics, the environment, or practice? We think dogs can be used as a model
to study the origin of talent.”
To explore that question, the scientists next plan to track the genetics and history of a variety of dog
breeds to try to identify the factors that produce such smart creatures. Many researchers believe that
border collies are likely so attuned to learning names because they were bred to herd sheep, which
requires paying close attention to herders’ whistles and verbal cues.
