Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australian Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an

highest sprinkler with respect to a stated datum level.
2.1.2 Prior to commencing installation
2.1.2.1 General Prior to commencing installation, the necessary approvals shall be
obtained from the appropriate regulatory authority empowered to approve the installation
of the standard sprinkler system (the installation approving authority) and from the local
water supply authority.
Licensed to LUU MINH LUAN on 25 Feb 2002. Single user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

2.1.2.2 Detailed requirements Detailed working drawings and all relevant

documentation of the protection, giving the information listed below, shall be provided to
the installation approving authority.
The drawings shall be on an indicated scale not less than 1:100 (in exceptional cases a

(g) Constructional details of ceilings and roofs and exterior walls and walls separating
sprinklered and non-sprinklered areas.
(h) Sectional elevations of each floor of each building indicating the distance of
sprinklers from ceilings and structural features which affect the sprinkler layout or
distribution from the sprinklers.
(j) Location and size of concealed roof or ceiling spaces, offices and other enclosures
ceiled at a level lower than the roof or ceiling. All unprotected areas such as
stairways, voids (lower levels of lift shafts) and toilets shall be indicated on each
applicable drawing.
(k) Location of trunking, stagings, platforms and other equipment such as machinery,
fluorescent light fittings and heaters, which may adversely affect the sprinkler
distribution.

AS 2118.10— 1995 6

(o) Location and size of any tail-end air valves, subsidiary stop valves (where
permitted) and drain valves.
(p) For installations erected on the dry or alternate wet and dry systems, the direction of
the drainage slope of the piping.
(q) The details of the location and specification of any orifice plate.
(r) Information relative to the mode of calculation to be used as follows:
(i) Partially pre-calculated systems For partially pre-calculated systems the
following shall be provided:
(A) Identification reference letters for the design points of each array on
the floor concerned, from which the distribution piping back to the
control assemblies is to be calculated hydraulically.
(B) A summary of the pressure loss calculations for the distribution piping,
at the rate of flow for the respective hazard class, set out on a form
similar to Figure 2.1.
(C) For light and ordinary hazard systems, the total pressure loss from each
design point to the control assembly shall be related to the maximum
pressure loss allowed, ignoring static head loss. Any permitted increase
in these losses due to the difference in static pressure between the level
of the sprinkler in the top storey shall be shown as x in Column 7 of
Licensed to LUU MINH LUAN on 25 Feb 2002. Single user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

Figure 2.1.
(D) For high hazard systems using the piping arrangements of
Tables 11.4.2.2(A) to 11.4.2.2(C) in AS 2118.1, the total pressure loss
in the various runs of distribution piping between each design point
and the control assembly shall be related to the residual pressure
available from the water supply when tested under the appropriate flow
rate. The pressure required at the design point and the static head loss
due to the height of the highest sprinkler, in the particular array, above
the control assembly shall be included in these calculations.
(ii) Fully hydraulically calculated systems Fully detailed and dimensioned
working drawings shall be provided. All drawings shall include the following
information:
(A) A node or pipe reference scheme which provides unique identification
of pipes, junctions, sprinkler heads and any pipe fittings which require
hydraulic consideration.
(B) The position of the hydraulically most unfavourable assumed area of
operation.
(C) The position of the hydraulically most favourable assumed area of
operation. Not required for unboosted town main water supply.
(D) Two or four sprinklers upon which the average density of discharge is
based.
(E) The height of each identified pressure value above datum.
Where required, a line diagram(s) shall be supplied and include the following
information:
(1) Node or pipe reference numbers.
(2) Distribution pipes under consideration.
(3) Range pipes under consideration.
(4) Sprinkler heads under consideration.

7 AS 2118.10— 1995

(5) Identification of the four hydraulically most unfavourable sprinkler

heads.
(6) Flow through each pipe section and sprinkler head.
(7) Pressures at each end of each pipe section and at the entry to each
sprinkler assumed to be operating.
(s) A schedule listing the number of sprinklers, medium and high velocity sprayers and
the area of protection.
(t) A summary schedule which states—
(i) the total area served by each control assembly;
(ii) the height of the highest sprinkler served by each control assembly; and
(iii) the type of system, i.e. wet, dry or alternate wet and dry system, and the size
of main stop valves.
(u) Independent accredited certifier’s endorsement.
(v) An undertaking that the water supplies comply with, and that the system has been
designed and will be installed in accordance with, AS 2118.1.
(w) A detailed drawing of water supplies and piping from these to the control assembly,
indicating the position and type of stop and back-pressure valves and pressure-
reducing valves, water meters, water locks and orifice plates, and any connection
