Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australian Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Notif ication of any inaccuracy or ambiguit y found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee on Automatic Sprinkler Installations FP/4 to supersede in part
AS 2118 —1982, SAA Code for Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems.
This Standard is the result of a consensus among representatives on the joint committee to
produce it as an Australian Standard.
The revisions to AS 2118 have included Standards Australia’s requirements to keep
product and installation Standards separate. When complete the series will comprise:
AS
2118 Automatic fire sprinkler systems
Part 1: Standard
Part 2: Wall wetting sprinklers (Drenchers)
Part 3: Deluge
Part 4: Residential
Part 5: Domestic
Part 6: Combined sprinkler and hydrant
Part 9: Piping support and installation
Part 10: Approval documentation

S E C T I O N 1 S CO P E A N D G E NE R A L
1.1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for the information to be provided
for the approval of standard fire sprinkler systems in accordance with AS 2118.1 and
automatic wall wetting sprinkler (Drencher) systems in accordance with AS 2118.2.
1.2 APPLICATION This Standard is intended for use by the specifiers, designers and
installers of fire sprinkler and wall wetting sprinkler (Drencher) systems.
this Standard, or are not mentioned in it, but that give equivalent results to those specified
are not necessarily prohibited. Advice on such matters can be sought from Standards
Australia, but the specified approval remains the prerogative of the regulatory authority.
1.5 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in
AS 2484.1, AS 2484.2, AS 3500.0, AS 2118.1, AS 2118.2, and that below, apply.
1.5.1 Regulatory authority—a Minister of the Crown, a government department, or
other public authority having power to issue regulations, orders, or other instructions in
respect of any subject covered by this Standard.

(o) Location and size of any tail-end air valves, subsidiary stop valves (where
permitted) and drain valves.
(p) For installations erected on the dry or alternate wet and dry systems, the direction of
the drainage slope of the piping.
(q) The details of the location and specification of any orifice plate.
(r) Information relative to the mode of calculation to be used as follows:
(i) Partially pre-calculated systems For partially pre-calculated systems the
following shall be provided:
(A) Identification reference letters for the design points of each array on
the floor concerned, from which the distribution piping back to the
control assemblies is to be calculated hydraulically.
(B) A summary of the pressure loss calculations for the distribution piping,
at the rate of flow for the respective hazard class, set out on a form
similar to Figure 2.1.
(C) For light and ordinary hazard systems, the total pressure loss from each
design point to the control assembly shall be related to the maximum
pressure loss allowed, ignoring static head loss. Any permitted increase
in these losses due to the difference in static pressure between the level
of the sprinkler in the top storey shall be shown as x in Column 7 of

Figure 2.1.
(D) For high hazard systems using the piping arrangements of
Tables 11.4.2.2(A) to 11.4.2.2(C) in AS 2118.1, the total pressure loss
in the various runs of distribution piping between each design point
and the control assembly shall be related to the residual pressure
available from the water supply when tested under the appropriate flow
rate. The pressure required at the design point and the static head loss
due to the height of the highest sprinkler, in the particular array, above
the control assembly shall be included in these calculations.
(ii) Fully hydraulically calculated systems Fully detailed and dimensioned
working drawings shall be provided. All drawings shall include the following
information:
(A) A node or pipe reference scheme which provides unique identification
of pipes, junctions, sprinkler heads and any pipe fittings which require
hydraulic consideration.
(B) The position of the hydraulically most unfavourable assumed area of
operation.
(C) The position of the hydraulically most favourable assumed area of
operation. Not required for unboosted town main water supply.
(D) Two or four sprinklers upon which the average density of discharge is
based.
(E) The height of each identified pressure value above datum.
Where required, a line diagram(s) shall be supplied and include the following
information:
(1) Node or pipe reference numbers.
(2) Distribution pipes under consideration.
(3) Range pipes under consideration.
(4) Sprinkler heads under consideration.

Where the water supplies include a town main, the nominal diameter shall be given
and also the relevant pressure/flow characteristics and whether the main is dead-end
or circulating; if dead-end, details shall be given of the nearest circulating main.
Where a compression-ignition engine driven pump is installed, it shall be confirmed
that the engine is capable of operating continuously on full load at the site elevation
for a period of 6 h and that the conditions governing the heating and ventilation of
the engine room laid down in AS 2941 are complied with.
Where automatic pumps form one or both of the supplies, a pump characteristic
curve(s) shall be provided showing the estimated performance of each pump under
installed conditions.
2.2.2.3 To water supply authority Details of all water supplies up to the alarm valve,
including pumps and tanks, shall be submitted for approval to the water supply authority.
2.2.3 On completion of installation When the installation has been completed and
final tests have been carried out, the installer shall provide the installation approving
authority with a certificate indicating that the work has been completed and the necessary
tests of the water supplies have been carried out in accordance with AS 2118.1.
NOTE: The form of completion certificate to be used is shown in Appendix B.
2.2.4 Compliance requirements When the installation has been completed and
acceptance tests have been carried out in accordance with Clause 2.2.3, the installer shall

provide the building owner with a certificate from an independent authorized inspector
certifying that the work has been completed in accordance with this Standard and the
relevant regulatory authorities.
