The following famous folklore from North Sumatra is quoted from the book Dongeng
Nusantara, publisher Bestari (2009).

In ancient times, in a village in North Sumatra there lived a farmer named Toba. He
worked as a farmer and fished. Every time he finished working on the field, he
headed for the river near his home. But that day it was unlucky, all day he sat by the
river, not a single fish would eat his hook bait.

Toba was very upset and began to despair. Finally he decided to go home.
Surprisingly, just about to get up, suddenly the hook was pulled to the bottom of the
river. Because the pull feels heavy, he is sure to catch a big fish. Sure enough, after
he lifted up, a carp as big as a human thigh floundered in front of him. How happy
Toba is. Soon the fish was brought home.

When he got home, a miracle happened. When he was about to cut the fish, the fish
was suddenly able to speak. "Please don't kill me. Later I will help your life."

Toba was amazed. "But I'm hungry. I need side dishes to eat today." Toba said.

"I will prepare food for you in the future. Let me go." The fish replied wagging. Toba,
who was sorry for him, finally released the fish back into the river.
Ajiab. Upon arrival home, there was a full meal on the table. Even in the kitchen
there is a beautiful woman who is cooking.

"Thank you for helping me. I was the incarnate woman of that fish. Now I am devoted
to you." He said. The woman turned out to be a princess who was cursed to be a
fish.

Some time later, Toba was anxious to marry the beautiful woman. The woman
agreed but she put forward a condition.

"Never do you say where I came from, even to our son later. If you violate it, there
will be a disaster." Toba agrees to this.

Not long after, they were blessed with a boy named Samosir. They live happily. But
since Samosir lived a pampered life, he grew up to be a lazy child. Even his behavior
tends to be naughty.

One day, his mother told Samosir to deliver rice to his father. Because it was forced,
this time Samosir wanted to carry it out. But halfway through, he felt hungry and ate
the food.
