The flow of energy from the producer to the decomposers shows how energy was
transformed in the food chain. When the secondary consumer eats a primary consumer, it
receives some energy that the primary consumer had received from the producer. When
the tertiary consumer eats a secondary consumer, it receives the energy that the secondary
consumer had received from the primary consumer and producer. Finally, the decomposers
receive whatever energy is left from the consumers and return these to the environment.
