I. Course Description
This course provides advanced psychiatric nursing principles needed for quality
decision making in patient care. Specifically, it includes unique issues and concerns in
preventing and managing special population. Specifically, it integrates holistic bio-
psychosocial approach to psychiatric nursing care emphasizing the full continuum of
preventive, crisis and rehabilitative nursing activities.
A. General: At the end of the course the students will be able to develop a deeper
understanding of the principles, issues and concerns in managing a special
population with emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation activities.
B. Specific: It is hoped that by the end of the course, the students will be able to
1. Identify and discuss current theories and practice.
2. Identify the psychosocial theory on which each treatment strategy is
based.
3. Discuss the current social and emotional concerns.
4. Identify how several of the theoretical perspectives have influenced
current nursing practice.
5. Identify the different roles of the nurse in varied treatment setting
and programs.
6. Describe psychiatric disorders and its appropriate nursing
interventions.
