OmniSourceTM Omnidirectional Sound Source — Type 4295

The OmniSource
The OmniSource Type 4295 represents a
breakthrough in omnidirectional sound
sources for the measurement of building
acoustics.

To make reproducible room acoustics

measurements, a device equating to a
point sound source, radiating sound
energy evenly in all directions is required.
The OmniSource Type 4295 achieves this
using a single high power loudspeaker,
radiating through a conical coupler to a
circular orifice.

The OmniSource Type 4295 combines

form with function, possessing an award
winning design and fulfilling all the
relevant standards for directivity (ISO 140
and ISO 3382).

Omnidirectional Sound Sources

Fig. 1 The traditional solution, For most acoustical measurements, the sound source must radiate
OmniPower Type 4296 sound evenly in all directions to give reproducible and reliable results.
Hence the relevant standards for the measurement of building acoustics
(ISO 140 and ISO 3382) require that an omnidirectional sound source be
used. The traditional solution uses 12 loudspeakers placed on a dodec-
ahedron. This solution provides high power, but is fairly cumbersome
and costly (see Fig. 1).

Fig. 2 The OmniSource Type 4295 New patented principle

The OmniSource Type 4295 (see Fig. 2) presents a new solution with a
design optimised for measurement of room acoustics, such as reverber-
ation time, sound distribution and spatial decay. The patented principle
of the OmniSource uses a single high-power loudspeaker, radiating
through a conical coupler to a circular orifice. The size of the orifice
and the shape of the OmniSource have been carefully engineered to
radiate sound evenly in all directions. Thus the OmniSource Type 4295
fulfils the national and international standards for omnidirectional
sound sources.

Design, Convenience and Economy

Fig. 3 OmniSource Type 4295 mounted The new design results in low weight
on a conventional tripod and slim size, making the Omni-
Source convenient to transport and
set up. The OmniSource mounts on
any standard tripod in the vertical
or horizontal position (see Fig. 3). A
textured hand-grip is provided in the
base for ease of handling and mount-
ing. A lightweight carrying case
(KE 0392) with foam inlay and adjust-
able shoulder strap is available as
an option. Using just one loudspeak-
er unit in a moulded polyurethane
cabinet, the OmniSource is both re-
liable and cost effective. The loud-
speaker unit is specifically designed
for the OmniSource and uses mag-
netic oil for cooling. It has high pow-
er capacity and will work with
amplifiers rated up to 150 W per
channel such as the Brüel & Kjær
Type 2716.

Fig. 8 Power Amplifier Type 2716 Power Amplifier Type 2716 is a

shown fitted in the Flight Case KE 0358 compact dual channel amplifier
with a peak operating power of
150 W per channel. Its many fea-
tures include quiet operation (no
cooling fan) and extensive protec-
tion against short-circuits, DC,
overheating and VHF. (A clip limiter
may be switched on, but is not rec-
ommended for measuring applications). The OmniSource is designed to
be driven by one channel of the Type 2716. The second channel can
be used to drive a second sound source, or both channels can be used
in a bridge arrangement for high power applications, such as driving
the OmniPower Type 4296.

Wireless Transmission Kit UA 1426

When performing measurements with a sound source, the signal driving

it needs to be controlled for bandwidth, spectrum and timing. If the
operator is mobile, moving between many measuring positions, a wire-
less link offers the best method of controlling the driver signal. Using
the Wireless Transmission Kit UA 1426 a system (see Fig. 9) can be
assembled from readily available components.

Fig. 12 2260 Investigator display screen 2260 Investigator is a versatile, hand-
showing a 1/3-octave level spectrum held, battery-operated, two-channel
sound analyzer. Like a personal compu-
ter, it is driven by application software
for various tasks. The Basic Sound Anal-
ysis Software BZ 7210, shipped with 2260
Investigator, converts the instrument into
a precision sound level analyzer conform-
ing with IEC and ANSI Type 1 standards.
It measures simultaneously a vast array of parameters including 1/3-
and 1/1-octave levels and statistics. The measured data may be output
to an IBM Proprinter compatible printer or downloaded to a PC using
optional Windows compatible software such as the Noise Explorer
Type 7815.

Fig. 13 2260 Investigator display screen The Building Acoustics Software BZ 7204
showing a reverberation decay curve converts 2260 Investigator into a building
acoustics analyzer. It can measure the pa-
rameters needed and calculate the
weighted sound reduction index accord-
ing to national and international stand-
ards. The frequency range is
50 Hz – 10 kHz in 1/3-or 1/1-octaves. For
room acoustics, it measures reverbera-
tion time (T20 and T30) for up to 25 positions and displays the decay
graphically. In each position, up to 99 decays may be averaged. The
average decay time is calculated for all decays. Levels may also be
measured, averaged and corrected for background noise. With the
BZ 7204, the 2260 also has a built-in noise generator for measurement
of sound level and reverberation time. Both pink and white noise can
be generated with selectable bandwidth and level.

the BZ 7204 and lets you store, view, mod-
ify, export and report your measure-
ments. When inspecting the
reverberation decay curves, it is possible
to graphically adjust the slope line, or
key in data manually. Reverberation de-
cays may be displayed as 3D-multispec-
tra, providing a complete overview of the
frequency dependent reverberation curves. And reverberation time meas-
urements may be averaged in two ways:
1. Averaging of reverberation times (T20 and T30) or
2. Averaging of decay curves (ensemble averaging)
