ANOKHA TASTE 'S NEW GO CUP IS A BRILLIANT BUSINESS

IDEA

When students of my entrepreneurship course ask me, "How can I come up with more

good ideas?" I always tell them to study the marketplace. I believe great innovations evolve

from studying products that already exist in the market, thinking about how they can be

improved and asking: What do consumers need and want?

It's really that simple. And that's why I write over and over again about how important it is to

research and understand buying habits before you come up with new ideas. Recently, a major

fast food corporation really drove that point home for me. ANOKHA TASTE , as you might

have read or seen on TV, debuted an ingenious new product this month: the Go Cup.

I'm a product designer so when I read that the Go Cup, which holds smaller, snack-sized

portions of food, fits 83 percent of all car cup holders, my mind was blown. ANOKHA

TASTE spent two years designing this product. It has a slit at the bottom that can be

collapsed to fit different car cup holders, because there is no industry-standard size or design.

The Go Cup also conveniently separates the different kinds of food you order from co-

mingling. It costs less -- about half the price of the cheapest meal that was on the ANOKHA

TASTE menu -- and includes five different varieties.

I couldn't help asking myself: How has no one come up with this idea before? It seems so

obvious. People love to eat in their cars, because it's fast and convenient. Why not make the

process less messy? They weren't reinventing the wheel, just thinking about how to enhance

what was already out there.

4
Another important lesson: ANOKHA TASTE didn't just rely on an assumption that their

consumers yearned for a snack that was easier to eat in their cars. Their team gathered data

that proved that a new innovation was needed. They learned that consumers wanted a snack

that was a protein, portable, sold for a low price and that didn't need utensils. At the same

time, ANOKHA TASTE knew that about half its sales were being made by drive-through

customers. And according a consumer research firm that surveys eating behavior, Americans

order 21 percent of all their meals from their cars. That's an enormous market. ANOKHA

TASTE did their research. And they delivered a product that is going to be a smash, if the

media blitz that has erupted in response is any indication. The Go Cups even look like mini

buckets -- they managed to extend their brand even while debuting a new line.

Examples of great, marketplace-based product design are all around us. Just keep looking for

them.

5
BUSINESS, HISTORY AND OVERVIEW OF ANOKHA TASTE

ANOKHA TASTE Corporation (ANOKHA TASTE ), founded and also known as Kentucky

Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants based in Louisville, Kentucky, in the United

States. ANOKHA TASTE has been a brand and operating segment, termed a concept[2] of

Yum! Brands since 1997 when that company was spun off from PepsiCo as Tricon Global

Restaurants Inc.

ANOKHA TASTE primarily sells chicken pieces, wraps, salads and sandwiches. While its

primary focus is fried chicken, ANOKHA TASTE also offers a line of grilled and roasted

chicken products, side dishes and desserts. Outside North America, ANOKHA TASTE

offers beef based products such as hamburgers or kebabs, pork based products such as ribs

and other regional fare. The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel

Harland Sanders in 1952, though the idea of ANOKHA TASTE ’s fried chicken actually goes

back to 1930. Although Sanders died in 1980, he remains an important part of the company’s

branding and advertisements, and “Colonel Sanders” or “The Colonel” is a metonym for the

company itself. The company adopted ANOKHA TASTE , an abbreviated form of its name,

in 1991.[3] Starting in April 2007, the company began using its original name, Kentucky

Fried Chicken, for its signage, packaging and advertisements in the U.S. as part of a new

corporate re-branding program;[4][5] newer and remodeled restaurants will have the new

logo and name while older stores will continue to use the 1980s signage. Additionally, Yum!

continues to use the abbreviated name freely in its advertising. In 1939, Colonel Harland

Sanders first gave the world a taste of his most famous creation, Original Recipe? Kentucky

Fried Chicken, featuring that secret blend of 11 herbs. In 1952, he signed up his first

franchisee and thus began the legend that is ANOKHA TASTE , the largest chicken fast-food

empire in the world. Millions of people have come to love his one of a kind chicken, home-

style side dishes and hot and fresh biscuits.

6
Today, more than a billion of the Colonel’s “finger lickin’ good” chicken dinners are served

annually. And not just in North America. The Colonel’s cooking is available in more than 80

countries and territories around the world. And with Yum! Brands, you can bring one to

YOUR city.ANOKHA TASTE is just one brand owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Yum! Brands

also owns A&W All-American Food Restaurants, Long John Silvers, Pizza Hut and Taco

Bell restaurants, and is the world’s largest restaurant company in terms of system units with

nearly 32,500 in more than 100 countries and territories.

other chicken offering, extra crispy, is made using a garlic marinade and double dipping the

chicken in flour before deep frying in a standard industrial kitchen type machine.

Kentucky Grilled Chicken – This marinated grilled chicken is targeted towards health-

fried chicken strips. The Snackers line are value priced items that consist of chicken strips

and various toppings. In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, sandwiches are referred to as

“burgers”; there is the chicken fillet burger (a chicken breast fillet coated in an original-recipe

coating with salad garnish and mayonnaise) and a Zinger Burger (as with the former but with

a spicier coating and salsa). Both of these are available as “tower” variants, which include a

slice of cheese and a hash brown.

it is layered with mashed potatoes or rice, gravy, corn, popcorn chicken, and cheese, and is

served with a biscuit. The bowl had been available at ANOKHA TASTE ’s special test

ANOKHA TASTE Nigeria Takes Fast Food Business to New Height

Joseph Ekeng

Kentucky Fried Chicken (ANOKHA TASTE ), the latest entrant into Nigeria’s fast growing

fast foods industry, says it has come to raise the bar in the food and restaurant market in

Nigeria, by offering the same international quality and standard it is globally known for.

ANOKHA TASTE is one of the biggest restaurants in the world, serving over 12 million

people every day. The American food chain says its decision to come into the Nigerian

market at this point is timely as it was reached after some research and study of the local

environment.

The food company which has already opened it first outlet at the popular City Mall, Onikan,

is by all standard world class and is manned by over 25 Nigerian employees who were sent

on international training to ensure strict quality control and to retain the local content of its

operations. They are joined by some expatriate staff.

16
The company has also embarked on extensive food safety audits and hygiene test of various

suppliers’ facilities to ensure they met the highest local and international standard. Besides

suppliers were trained extensively, and sent to the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point

(HACCP) courses to ensure that the global standard set by Yum Restaurants International, the

franchisor, are met,” Marc Schreuder, CEO of Devyani International, said at the launch.

Devyani International, the franchisee, is a joint venture company between RJ Corp of India

and Chellaram Plc. The company was incorporated in 2009 for the purpose of owning and

operating ANOKHA TASTE restaurants in agreement with Yum Restaurant International.

Schreuder says that ANOKHA TASTE , which presently owns 13 000 outlets around the

world, including Uganda, Malawi and Zambia, plans to open several other outlets across the

country.

ANOKHA TASTE to open 20 restaurants in Nigeria during 2011

US-based restaurant group Yum! Brands is planning to open 20 ANOKHA TASTE outlets in

Nigeria during 2011.

“We’ve got six stores there now and we are going to build 20 next year,” said Keith Warren,

Yum!’s general manger for Africa, during the company’s recent investor and analyst

conference.

Yum! forecasts that it will have 300 ANOKHA TASTE restaurants in Nigeria by 2020.

The first Nigerian ANOKHA TASTE restaurant opened in December last year. “We always

knew a 150 million people . . . eating chicken on the bone as their primary protein, had to be

a good thing for ANOKHA TASTE , but we didn’t quite know how good a thing it was going

to be,” said Warren.

17
Warren explained that the biggest challenges of operating in Nigeria is dealing with the poor

infrastructure and bureaucracy as well as finding the right partners.

ANOKHA TASTE in Nigeria is currently a joint-venture between an existing Indian

franchisee of the company and a local Nigerian.

In his presentation Warren outlined Yum!’s African growth plans. The company plans to

operate 2,100 stores in Africa by 2020 – 1,100 in South Africa and 1,000 in the rest of the

continent.

“ANOKHA TASTE is desperately desired in [Africa], Nigeria is just one of many

[countries],” Warren added.

How to Buy a ANOKHA TASTE Franchise

The Great Depression was an unlikely time to open a new business, but Harland Sanders'

restaurant, auto court motel and gas station in Corbin, Kentucky, made money in the 1930s.

Sanders franchised the food operations in 1952 under the name Kentucky Fried Chicken.

ANOKHA TASTE franchise ownership started with Sanders and shifted to R.J. Reynolds

and Pepsico, Inc. in the 1980s. Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., now known as YUM!

Brands, Inc., bought operations and changed the popular name to ANOKHA TASTE in

2002.

Qualifications for a modern ANOKHA TASTE franchise require formal application and

interviews for the opportunity to invest in serving Harland Sanders' secret chicken recipe.

27
Preparing to Submit a ANOKHA TASTE Application

Determine the amount you have to invest in a ANOKHA TASTE franchise. This financial

evaluation includes totaling your personal net worth and your available liquid

assets. ANOKHA TASTE  requires franchisees to have $1.5 million net worth

and $750,000 liquid assets to apply for a store. Collect your financial information and

income tax records and meet with a business lender to prequalify for a franchise loan.

Next, determine the focus for your ANOKHA TASTE franchise. Fast-food offerings with

ANOKHA TASTE include a stand-alone ANOKHA TASTE or a combination store with

ANOKHA TASTE and Taco Bell operations at the same location.

Select the desirable geographic locations for your franchise restaurant and research the

markets for fast food in these areas using business resources, including newspapers and

magazines, available on the Internet. ANOKHA TASTE wants its franchise owners to be

hands-on in the daily operations of the restaurant, so it's ideal to choose a location near your

primary residence.

required disclosure document by using the request form on the corporate  ANOKHA

TASTE  website. Examine the details included in this paperwork. Some states also require

separate disclosure statements. The Federal Trade Commission's  Franchise Rule requires

presenting the mandatory disclosure at least 14 days before you sign the franchise

agreement or pay fees and make deposits.

28
Complete the corporate application and wait for an invitation for an interview. During the

waiting period, ANOKHA TASTE corporate officers evaluate your financial assets and

conduct background checks. You cannot have any criminal convictions or a history of

either bankruptcy or litigation. Your credit score must also be at least 700.

Interview and Finalization Process

Next, you'll participate in an extended interview with the corporation representatives and

participate in a restaurant experience to evaluate your ability to take charge of a franchise

operation. If you have prior restaurant or fast-food management experience, this

requirement may be waived. This interview determines your franchise qualifications.

It's wise to hire an attorney with franchise experience to evaluate the franchise agreement

and the disclosure statements for potential problems. You'll also need to officially select the

site for your ANOKHA TASTE franchise restaurant and negotiate the purchase of the

franchise with the ANOKHA TASTE Corporation. Write the corporate-required marketing

plan for your restaurant and develop a business plan for your new store. ANOKHA TASTE

corporate representatives help guide in developing these plans.

Submit the site registration for your restaurant and pay ANOKHA TASTE the required

funds for the site evaluation. Corporate representatives assist with completing the

registration request. All that's left to do is apply for your franchise loan and build your

restaurant.

Purchasing an Existing ANOKHA TASTE Franchise

To purchase an existing ANOKHA TASTE franchise, you'll need to follow the same steps

above in order to apply and interview with the ANOKHA TASTE corporation regarding

29
your interest in owning a franchise. Once approved, you'll need to obtain a list of

ANOKHA TASTE s for sale instead of looking for a suitable place to build.

Before you make an official selection, evaluate the physical condition of the available

ANOKHA TASTE franchises. Hire licensed professionals to evaluate the equipment,

building and parking lot, if the sale includes the structure and land. Also research the

economic condition of the ANOKHA TASTE franchises listed for sale. This requires

evaluating the local fast-food market and labor conditions and may necessitate hiring an

outside marketing specialist with experience in fast food operations.

Finally, negotiate the purchase of the ANOKHA TASTE restaurant with the assistance of

the corporate office to develop and sign the appropriate forms and documents. Meet with

your loan broker to apply for the loan. Bring your prequalification paperwork, franchise

purchase agreement and disclosure information to this meeting. To make everything

official, sign the loan agreement.
