INDUCTIVE PROXIMITY SWITCHES

• Working Principal
An Inductive Alternating R.F. field is developed at the front of
the sensing surface of the proximity switch. This field is
generated by the resonant circuit coil of the oscillator. Energy is
absorbed when a metal piece is brought into the R.F. field near
the sensing surface, causing oscillation to stop. Hence the
demodulated voltage feeding the trigger disappears.

• Advantages
These switches can be used anywhere where extreme
conditions exist for eg. :
1. With Lubricants and Cutting Oils
2. Under Vibrations
3. Environments where steam or water is present
4. Dusty Environments

• Applications
They are primarily used when the object to be sensed is
Metallic. These sensors can detect the position of metals (any
type). Some applications can be

CAPACITIVE PROXIMITY SWITCHES

• Working Principal
When an object ( metallic or non metallic) approaches the
active surface the capacitance between the mass and the active
zone of the proximity sensors increases. When the present
value is exceeded the oscillator starts, the oscillator voltage
changes, the trigger stage activated and this results in a change
in the switched output condition.

• Applications
Capacitive proximity switches or sensors are primarily used
when the object to be detected is non metallic. Capacitive
sensors sensed the most common materials are : plastic, glass,
wood and paper.
Another common application is as a liquid level control in a bin
or hopper.
They are particularly suitable for controlling the filling level in
tanks where liquid, powder or granulated materials are to be
monitored.
SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY

• Working Principal
Switch mode power supplies are an extraordinary array of high-
frequency alternatives. These are the switching regulators that
offer higher efficiency than the linear regulators. Also, they can
step-up, step-down, and invert the input voltage.

• Advantages
Change the output to a different voltage level then the input (
step-up or step-down).
2. Isolate the output from the input.
3. Provide the user with a means to vary the output
4. Can get constant output at variable input.
5. Stabilize the output against the influence of:-
a) Source changes (source effect)
b) Load changes (load effect)
c) Temperature changes ( temp. Effect)
d) The passage of time ( time effect or drift)

PHOTO-ELECTRIC PROXIMITY SWITCHES

• Working Principal
Photoelectric proximity switches or sensors are primarily used
when the object to be sensed is metallic or nonmetallic.
Photoelectric sensors are three different types:-
1. Diffused
2. Through beam
3. Retroreflective

• Applications
Photoelectric proximity switches are used to counting on
conveyor belts, paper monitoring, sensing the end of a roll, etc.
MAGNETIC PROXIMITY SWITCHES

• Working Principal
Magnetic proximity switches are used to detect the magnetic
field. It consist of two parts, one is the sensor and other is
actuator. Magnetic proximity sensors make ancillary power
unnecessary and makes the sensors and actuator combination
the cost effective selection when compared to other sensing
technologies.

• Applications
Some applications of magnetic proximity switches are:

MAGNETIC FLOAT SWITCHES

• Working Principal
A float sensor is a device used to detect the level of liquid
within a tank. The switch may be used in a pump, an indicator,
an alarm, or other devices. Magnetic float sensor is an
electromagnetic ON/OFF switch. It helps to sense the level of
water present in the overhead tank or sump. These sensors has
a permanent magnet in the float. As the float rises or falls with
level of water in the tank, the switch gets activated by the
magnet in the float, thereby the signal which is obtained from
the sensors is used along with the water level controllers for
controlling the motor pump.

Applications
Some applications of magnetic float switches are:
1. Level detection for almost all liquid media
2. Pump and level control
3. Chemical, petrochemical industry, natural gas, offshore,
shipbuilding, machine building, power generating
equipment, power plants
4. Process water and drinking water treatment
