The X-ray Source contains the X-ray Tube and associated High-Voltage Power Supply (HVPS). The NT
X-ray Tube, under the control of system and X-ray control electronics, generates a fan-beam of X-rays
that penetrate the item under inspection as it passes through the inspection tunnel. X-rays are On when
a.) the photocell beam is interrupted or “broken,” and b.) the conveyor starts.
The Inspection Tunnel is a lead-lined metal enclosure within which the item being inspected is
X-rayed. Lead curtains cover both ends of the tunnel to limit the effects of X-ray scatter. The system
uses photocells mounted in the tunnel walls to determine when a bag or package enters the tunnel.
These photocells then signal the system to turn on the X-rays. At the same time, the amber X-ray
“ON” lights located at both ends of the Mainframe, and an indicator on the Fold-Down Console, are
illuminated.
The Conveyor moves items to be inspected through the inspection tunnel. The conveyor assembly
consists of a supporting frame at each end, a belt, and power roller assembly. The Operator controls
the conveyor.
An L-shaped Detector Array covers two sides of the inspection tunnel. Items are inspected as they are
carried by the conveyor through the X-ray fan-beam. The resulting X-ray attenuation is detected by the
array. The digitized detector data is then passed to a high-speed computer for analysis.
The Operator Console (Fold-Down or Remote) consists of a Power On/Power Off Keyswitch,
Conveyor Control area and a Touchpad. The Operator uses these to apply power to the system, control
the conveyor and to analyze images.
The Display Monitor (Top-mounted or Remote) is an SVGA monitor with graphics adapter hardware
capable of 256 simultaneous colors at 1280 x 1024 resolution. To adjust the monitor’s brightness,
contrast, etc., refer to the manufacturer’s manual provided with your system.

2. Wait for Initialization and Verification to be completed. Follow all onscreen instructions.

Initialization
At power-on, the Windows Operating System will start, and then the system initialization
process begins. The time it takes for initialization varies, and is largely dependent on the
system’s state prior to the start-up process. Initialization usually takes about two minutes to
complete, but can take up to six minutes if the system has been unused for a long time.

NOTE:
If the system does not become active after six minutes or
if system verification fails, turn OFF power, wait one
minute and begin again. If the power-up cycle fails a
second time, contact L-3 Communications, Security &

Icon Toolbar
The Icon Toolbar typically contains 15 icons on start-up, but may have as many as 18 depending on
the system configuration. Each icon represents a specific mode or imaging function that can be
activated or deactivated. All available icons have a raised gray, 3-Dimensional appearance.
There are three basic icon categories: Zoom icons, which provide image magnification; Image Mode
icons, which select the basic display mode; and Image Enhancement icons, which perform additional
image processing functions on the basic image mode. Note that certain image modes may temporarily
disable some image enhancement features.
The Operator selects an individual icon by moving a finger across the bottom portion of the Touchpad
until the desired icon is highlighted (appearing “pressed in”) on the display, and then lifting his/her
finger. All or none of the Image Enhancement icons may be activated at any time. In the case of Zoom
and Image Mode, only one may be selected at a time (e.g., Trimat and Gray Scale cannot work
simultaneously).

‘GRAY SCALE’ in Figure 4 below). Lifting your finger causes the box to be removed. Sliding your
finger from one icon to the next after an initial box has appeared will cause the next corresponding text
box to appear.
If an icon is not available to the Operator or has been disabled (see ‘REJECT’), it appears grayed-out

visible at twice the original magnification. When 4x is
selected, the indicated region is visible at four times the
original magnification. When 8x or 16x is selected, the
indicated region is visible at eight or sixteen times the

1. To use direct zoom, slide your finger over the lower portion of the Touchpad to select the
desired magnification level on the Toolbar. If the system was previously in a high
magnification mode, the image will return to 1x in order to allow the Operator to select the area
of interest. A Zoom Box will appear in the center of the screen.
2. Move your finger about the upper portion of the Touchpad to place the Zoom Box around the
desired area on the screen.
3. Lift your finger. Once your finger is lifted, the selected area will be immediately magnified. A
small window box will display at the upper-right corner of the screen when the image is
zoomed. It contains a thumbnail image of the whole screen and a cyan color box that shows
which part of the screen is currently zoomed. When a finger moves around the Touchpad, the
cyan color box also moves to reflect the position of the zoom window. All other icons behave
according to their function while in a zoom mode, allowing image analysis functions on a
focused section of the item.
Note: De-select Contrast Windowing to use the Touchpad to move the cyan box around the
Thumbnail window and, therefore, zoom a different area.
Continuous Zoom: The presence of one or both of these ‘magnifying
glass’ icons in the Toolbar means that the Continuous Zoom feature has
been enabled. When the Operator uses Continuous Zoom, he/she first
selects the desired icon from the toolbar and then lifts his/her finger.
1. Select Zoom In (+) and lift your finger. A rectangular box appears over the screen’s center.
Place a finger on the upper portion of the screen to move the box around, and then lift your
finger. This causes a.) the selected area to be magnified by two times, b.) a Thumbnail window
to appear in the upper-right corner of the screen, and c.) the (1x) icon to change appearance.
Placing a finger on the (+) icon will cause the image to be magnified by a factor of two each
time it is selected (i.e., 2x $ 4x $ 8x up to 64x).
Note: De-select Contrast Windowing to use the Touchpad to move the cyan box around the
Thumbnail window and, therefore, zoom a different area.
2. If Zoom Out (–) is selected and the finger is then lifted, the image size immediately decreases by
a factor of two. To return to a 1x view, select the numbered icon (2x, 4x, 8x…) and then lift
your finger.

imaging, displays the contents of the item being inspected in terms of their atomic NT

Organic materials are displayed in orange; inorganic or mixed materials are displayed
in green; and metallic objects are displayed in blue.

Because explosive materials and narcotics are essentially organic in their composition,
the Trimat mode may assist the Operator in evaluating some potential threats.
However, many innocuous materials (such as foodstuffs) are also organic in nature. All
Image Enhancement functions except Contrast are available in this mode.
Organic Stripping: Use of this image mode results in all organic materials being
stripped away from the displayed image, leaving visible only mixed (inorganic) and/or
metallic materials. All Image Enhancement functions except Contrast are available in
this mode.
Inorganic Stripping: Use of this image mode strips away all inorganic materials,
leaving only organic materials visible on the display screen. Contrast Windowing is
available. All Image Enhancement functions except Contrast are available in this mode.

Gray-Scale: In this mode, the item being inspected is displayed in 240 shades of gray,
representing the attenuation of each pixel. All Image Enhancement functions, including
Contrast, are available in this mode.
PseudoColor: This option can be configured into the system as a function of the
screening process. It may appear as an added icon in the toolbar. Selecting this icon
displays the contents of the item being inspected using an extremely high contrast to
accentuate differences in material density. It uses a range of colors to display objects of
dissimilar density, rather than shades of the same color. This may make it easier to
distinguish between objects that look similar in Gray-Scale. All Image Enhancement
functions, except Contrast Windowing, are available in this mode.

If Stop Mode has been enabled on your system, the belt stops automatically after each bag is
scanned to force the Operator to look at each bag. The bag image is centered for viewing ease.
The belt DOES NOT restart automatically, but waits for a button to be pressed.

3.2.4 Inspection
With the conveyor running, the system begins generating X-rays after the item being inspected enters
the inspection tunnel and interrupts the photocell beam located just inside the tunnel. X-rays turn off
when inspection is complete or if the conveyor belt is stopped.
Shortly after the item under inspection enters the inspection tunnel, its image starts to scroll across the
monitor screen in the same direction as the conveyor belt. When an image is scanned in the reverse
direction, again, the image scrolls in the same direction as the conveyor belt.
Imaging tools such as Zoom, Trimat or Gray-Scale modes, Contrast, Edge Enhancement and Reverse
Video may be employed only after scanning is complete. If an image appears suspicious during
inspection, these tools can be used to further investigate a perceived threat before clearing or rejecting
the bag.
Refer to Section 3.2.2 for details on how to use these imaging tools.

NOTE:
X-rays turn on for approximately five seconds whenever
the conveyor is started.

CAUTION!
If an item (or items) jams inside the inspection tunnel, an
error message will appear on the Monitor (see below).

to meet certain requirements of the United Kingdom’s
Department for Transport (DfT). If so, these changes are
explained in the appropriate sections that follow, and are
placed in a shaded box like this.

4.1.1 Terminology Used

TIP (Threat Image Projection) – provides a system to monitor Operator performance, collects data and
allows reports to be generated and downloaded. The TIP feature is used to display fictional bags as
well as project fictional objects into real bags for the purposes of monitoring Operator perception and
reaction to potential threats.
CTI (Combined Threat Image) – the image of a previously scanned bag, from a library of images.
Each image mimics those qualities of any real bag that an Operator may encounter during normal
inspection. The image may contain real threats or objects too dense to be penetrated.
FTI (Fictional Threat Image) – a threat image is projected into a live bag image. Each image mimics
those qualities of any real threat that an Operator may encounter during normal inspection. The image
may contain real threats or objects too dense to be penetrated.
There are four privilege levels with TIP software activated:
(Level 1) - Administrator
(Level 2) - Manager
(Level 3) - Supervisor

4.1.3 TIP Functions

TIP tests Operator proficiency with various scoring and reporting functions. It sends stored threat CTI
and FTI images to the Workstation as time is available between ‘live’ bag images (CTI) and in live bag
images (FTI).
Operator responses are made using the REJECT icon located at the left end of the Toolbar (Figure 5),
or by pressing the CONVEYOR STOP button on the Console.

Figure 5: Sample Toolbar with REJECT Icon (TIP Activated)

The REJECT icon appears in the Toolbar when the Threat Image Projection function is configured and
activated. The Operator selects this icon when an image – or an object in an image, appears suspicious.
These threats may be highlighted with a red box (potential explosive threat) or yellow pixels (density
alert). Threats may also appear as shape-related within the image, such as guns or knives.
Outcomes are logged and reported by the system as:
Hit Bag contains an FTI or is a threat CTI. Operator correctly selected REJECT icon.
Miss Bag contains an FTI or is a threat CTI. Operator incorrectly did not select
REJECT icon.
Operator does not respond to a TIP image within set Timeout period (or when
image slides off the screen).
False Alarm No injected image. Operator incorrectly selected REJECT icon.

The system is able to generate reports for an individual or all individuals for varying time periods.

If a TIP image was projected and either you restart the
conveyor without selecting the REJECT icon, or the TIP
image has timed out, a “missed” feedback message bar
similar to the ones shown below will be displayed.

Select the REJECT icon. The conveyor will stop.

Whether or not the threat has been projected by the system, feedback will be immediately
displayed. (See Section 4.1.7 for more information.)
a.) If the threat has been projected, a Green (or Blue, see next page) dashed box will then
surround it.
b.) If the threat has not been projected, no such box will appear.
In either case, a message box will appear at the bottom of the screen.

the overlay and selecting it again restores the overlay.
Syringe: This icon controls the Narcotics Threat overlay. Its presence indicates that

removes the overlay and selecting it again restores the overlay.

4.3.1 The “OnePress Color Removal” Option

If a feature called “OnePress Color Removal” is enabled, the Threat and Density overlays are combined
into a single overlay (red rectangle + yellow pixels). The icon functions are combined, as well.

4.3.2 The “Dynamic Window” Option

Dynamic Window: The appearance of this pair of icons in the Toolbar – as
shown, with the left-most pre-selected (white), means that the Dynamic

Window feature has been enabled. The Bomb icon or the Syringe icon may be
Primary, depending on the configuration. This means that the system will
or
scan for the selected primary threat automatically.
Once the item being inspected has been scanned, the Operator may then select
the Secondary threat icon to review the image for the presence of components
PRIMARY / SECONDARY
under that category. The item itself does not have to be re-scanned.

NOTE:
Secondary icons are disabled whenever the conveyor belt
is moving. Therefore, you must stop the belt, select the
secondary icon, and review the image..

The Reject icon appears at the left end of the PX X-ray machine Toolbar when the NSW is connected,
configured and activated (Figure 14).

Figure 14: Toolbar with REJECT Icon – Network Supervisor Workstation Activated

The Operator selects this icon when an image or an object in an image appears suspicious. Threats may
be overlaid with a red box (possible explosive or narcotic) or yellow pixels (density alert). They may
also appear as shape-related within the image, such as guns or knives.

Please Note:
The REJECT icon’s presence can also mean that the TIP
option is active (see 4.1.3 TIP Functions on page 25).

If your Supervisor has configured the system to “Send All”:

An image of every bag is automatically sent to the Network Supervisor Workstation. No action is
required on your part. During this image sending process, the conveyor belt stops until the image has
been presented at the NSW. Only then will the belt restart automatically, allowing the next bag to be
scanned. The REJECT icon is unavailable (grayed out).

Note:
If a particular image is not sent to the NSW, the REJECT
icon becomes available (raised) after the displayed error
message is cleared. The Operator may send the image:

It is important to follow all on-screen instructions. NT
Failure to do so could result in personal injury and/or

When an error condition occurs, an error message is displayed in a red panel at the bottom of the
monitor screen. The error message contains a detailed description of the condition. The actual text of
the error message varies with the error condition. The condition category, on the first line, is a general
description of the condition and points out the subsystem that caused the condition. The detailed
description, on the second line, presents more specific information about the condition and how to
remedy the problem, if possible. Refer to the following examples:
1: Emergency Stop Condition
