Needs of Starter
A Starter is needed for a motor

• To Switching the motor.
• To withstand the high surge current.
• To carry the full load current.
• To protect the motor in;
 Overload condition
 Under voltage condition
 Single phasing condition
 Reverse phasing condition &
 Unbalanced voltage condition.

Needs of Starter
Needs of Starter for 3-PH Induction Motor

Most of the induction motor are started directly on line, but when very large motor are started that
way, they causes a disturbance of voltage on the supply lines due to large starting current surge, Which
causes damage to adjoining equipment. Thus, a starter is needed in order to limit the starting current.

DOL starter
• A starter which connects a motor directly across the line is called direct on line (DOL) starter.
• In this method, the motor is connected by means of a starter across the full load supply without
any provision to reduce the starting current i.e. there is no device to reduce the starting current.
• It is the simplest, Inexpensive form of motor starter & easy to install & maintain.
• Components of DOL starter
• Circuit breaker
• Electromagnetic Contactor
• Overload Relay
• Start & Stop button etc.

DOL starter
• Basically there are two types of protection in DOL starter;

A) Under Voltage Protection
when supply voltage is not sufficient or there is failure of power supply,
the coil is de-energized and motor will disconnected.
B) Overload & Single Phasing Protection

The motor is protected against overload & Single phasing by a
thermal overload relay, which open the control circuit when
overload or Single phasing occur.
Note: Other protection device like Circuit breaker, SPP etc. also used for protection and we can use these device as per our need.

Advantages of DOL Starter
• Most Economical and Cheapest Starter

• Simple to establish, operate and maintain
• Simple Control Circuitry
• Easy to understand and trouble‐shoot.
• It provides 100% torque at the time of starting.
• Only one set of cable is required from starter to motor.
Disadvantages of DOL Starter
• It does not reduce the starting current of the motor.

• High Starting Current
• Mechanically Harsh
• Voltage Dip
• High starting Torque

Star delta starter
• Most of the induction motor are started directly on line, but when very large motor are started that way,
they causes a disturbance of voltage on the supply lines due to large starting current surge.
• To limit the starting current surge, large induction motors are started at reduced voltage and then have
full supply voltage reconnected, when they run up to near rotated speed.
• In SD starter, at starting the stator winding is connected in star, therefore the applied voltage to each
phase of winding is 1/√3 of the rated voltage of the motor.
• When motor is picked –up the speed (say 70 to 80% of its normal speed) the phase of the stator winding
are connected in delta & Now full supply voltage is applies across the stator windings.

 It is relatively cheap compared to other reduced voltage method.
 Good torque/current performance
• Disadvantages;
 Low Starting Torque (only 33%)
 Six terminal motor required (delta connected)
 It requires 02 set of cables from starter to motor.
 Break in supply-Possible transients
