Quarter 3 - Module 2:
Deodorant and Talcum Powder
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can continue your
studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will
tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys
are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM.
Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Deodorant and Talcum Powder

What is It

What is deodorant?
A deodorant is a material that is applied to the body to avoid or mask body odor in
the armpits, groin, and feet, and in some cases vaginal secretions, due to bacterial
breakdown of transpiration. Sweating itself, usually by blocking sweat glands, is avoided
by a subclass of deodorants, called antiperspirants.

What is the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants?

Deodorant eliminates odor, while
antiperspirant protects against odor and
sweat. If you want to prevent underarm
wetness, deodorant can help keep you
dry, though antiperspirant also helps
regulate sweat. In antiperspirants,
aluminum is the active ingredient that
helps suppress sweat.

What ingredients do deodorants and antiperspirants contain?

8
Some Health and Environmental Risks
The most common chemical ingredients found in deodorant and antiperspirants
are parabens, triclosan, phthalates, propylene glycol and aluminum. Research has linked
these ingredients to several medical conditions including types of cancer. Here are some
of the ingredients that might result to the following medical and environmental conditions.

INGREDIENTS MEDICAL CONDITIONS

• can dry out and irritate the skin

• links to breast cancer and

Alzheimer’s disease have been
claimed, but without conclusive
evidence
• very little aluminum is actually
absorbed through the skin

• can accumulate in the environment

• can cause allergies

• may be carcinogenic
• Show weak hormone-disrupting
behavior

• can cause frostbite if sprayed for too

long (caused by rapid cooling of the
propellant during expansion)

• can cause allergies

• could contribute to the development

of resistant bacteria
• Possible hormone-disrupting behavior
(found in animal studies)

Talcum Powder Composition in Cosmetics
Setting powder is the present trend among beauty junkies. Setting powder is a type of
cosmetic with a make-up brush or sponge that is put on the face to lock in the foundation
and concealer. For its way of camouflaging fine lines or creases on the skin, the setting
powder is popular. What many do not know about this famous item is that it contains
powdered talcum.

What is Talcum Powder?

A naturally occurring mineral is talcum powder, or talc. In daily products, such as
baby powder, cosmetics, and meats, talc is used. Talcum powder, in chemical words, is a
hydrous silicate magnesium. Magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen are the
components of talcum powder. The chemical formula for talc is Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.
Talcum powder is used in cosmetics as an ingredient
because of its purported benefits. By rendering facial
makeup opaque, removing moisture, preventing build-up or
"caking" and enhancing the quality of the product, talcum
powder in cosmetics provides a flawless effect on the skin.
A talc powder's tiny platelets readily adhere to the skin but
can easily be washed off. Talc's softness permits it to be
added and removed without inducing skin abrasion. Talc
also has the ability to absorb oils and transpiration produced
by human skin. Because of its ability to retain moisture,
absorb odor, bind to the skin, serve as a lubricant, and Talcum Powder
produce an astringent effect when in contact with human
skin, talc is considered as an important ingredient in many antiperspirants.
In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos, a substance known to cause
cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled. Asbestos is also a naturally occurring
silicate mineral, but with a different crystal structure. Talc and asbestos are minerals that
are naturally present and can be found on the surface of the planet. Asbestos, however, is
a known carcinogen when inhaled, unlike talc.
The World Health Organization is a member of the International Agency for Cancer
Research (IARC) (WHO). The primary goal is to identify the causes of cancer. IARC
classifies talc that contains asbestos as “carcinogenic to humans.” Based on the lack of
data from human studies and on limited data in lab animal studies, IARC classifies inhaled
talc not containing asbestos as “not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans”. Based on
limited evidence from human studies of a link to ovarian cancer, IARC classifies the
perineal (genital) use of talc-based body powder as possibly carcinogenic to humans.

Now that you have learned the different ingredients and the uses of the substances
found in deodorant and talcum powder, let us test your understanding by answering the
different tasks and activities on the next pages. Let us start!
