SCRIPT FOR 9E ASSEMBLY – 9th DECEMBER

SAPTASWA: A very good morning to respected Principal Ma’am, coordinators, teachers and our dear
friends. I am Saptaswa from 9E and today my fellow classmates will be presenting before you an
assembly on International Anti-Corruption Day which is celebrated on the 9th of December. I'd now like
to hand over the mic to Ishaa.

ISHAA: Before going into the depth of the topic, we need to understand the concept of corruption.
Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries. Corruption
undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental
instability. Corruption not only follows conflict but is also frequently one of its root causes. It fuels
conflict and inhibits peace processes by undermining the rule of law. I'd now like to invite Samaira to
continue

SAMAIRA: Now that we know what corruption is and the reasons for it being called a social evil, let us
now delve into where we can see it and who it affects. Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic
institutions by distorting electoral processes and creating trap like situations. A very generalized and
basic example of this can be seen in multiple countries very commonly. The government does its best by
passing out schemes and policies for the impecunious strata of our population, however most of the
deserving households do not benefit from such schemes as the people holding important posts in
government offices turn out to be corrupt themselves, and the money for the project ends up going into
their pockets. Vridhi will take over from here.

VRIDHI: The example given by Samaira shows us how the people who are actually in need end up with
no profit at all. From gaining votes in elections, to getting seats in colleges, corruption can be seen at
many instances. And in all of these instances, it ends up harming people and their social and financial
wellbeing. It occurs when an entrusted entity abuses its position of power for its own benefit. Now
Archisha will talk more about this topic.

ARCHISHA: The 2022 International Anti-Corruption Day seeks to highlight the crucial link between
anti-corruption and peace, security, and development. This 9th of December is held to raise awareness
of corruption.. It may be extremely difficult to stop a complex mechanism like corruption, but education
and awareness could be the two keys for a successful corruption-free world. So let us make sure to
spread word about the ills of corruption and create a fairer world. I'd now request Ishika to take our
assembly further.

ISHIKA: Thank you Archisha. Corruption sure seems to be a broad topic, let us test your knowledge so far
on the topic with a quick quiz which will be conducted by Anusha and Adrija! This will then be followed
by the rest of our presentation.

(ANUSHA and ADRIJA conduct their quiz)

ISHIKA: Now we would like to present before you a very short skit depicting a scene involving corruption.

SCENE 1
(Saptaswa is standing and holding some papers, Heba, Pragati and Aryan walk in talking)
HEBA: Good morning sir, how do you do? Could you please give us our timetables?
SAPTASWA: I’m fine thank you! What are your names though?
PRAGATI: Pragati Agarwal, Aryan Jain, Rishima Layek
SAPTASWA: (Shuffles the papers) Abrar, Afaque, Pragati Agarwal, Here you go…..Bararia,
Bhattacharya...and…uh…Chakravarty, Das, Fulfagar, Ghosh, Gupta, Jain…this is yours….
Jaiswal……uhm…

SAMAIRA: Harshita, known for her wealth and influence in the city, was often termed as a "DESPOT".
She enters the class with her siblings, Paridhi and Asad. Asad has failed to gain admission in 13 colleges
across the nation. His older sister has now taken up the responsibility to get him admitted to a college,
by hook or by crook.
(Asad walks in with a heavy load of attitude)
SAMAIRA: Harshita whispers something to Saptaswa and hands over a bundle of notes. Saptaswa on
seeing the amount of money was left AGAPE. He greedily curls his fist around the money and turns back
to Rishima looking apologetic.

SAPTASWA: Sorry Rishima, but it seems as if you won’t be able to join the college this semester.
Unfortunately, the seat has been reserved for Asad Uddin Ahmed.
HEBA: But this is unfair! I scored one of the highest marks in the boards in the entire state! Besides you
were just about to hand me my timetable, how can the seat be reserved already?
PARIDHI (maliciously): That was a minute ago, now the situation has changed. These days reservation is
just a click away!
HARSHITA: Quit talking honey, I have reserved the seat for my brother. I’ve paid a handsome amount of
money for it, something which IMPECUNIOUS people like you can only dream of.
ARYAN: Wait, what! You can’t just remove someone from a college and send their education down the
drain!
ASAD: Stop this drama immediately! (Looks towards Heba) Why do you even want to study? You are
probably going to spend the rest of your life in a kitchen anyway!
PRAGATI: (stamping foot) This is severe injustice and we shall not stay quiet! We will retaliate!
PARIDHI: Sure, we’d like to see that happen!

(Aryan, Pragati and Heba glare and walk out while Saptaswa counts the money and Harshita, Asad and
Paridhi smirk at each other)
SAMAIRA: The students dash out of the classroom infuriated at the EFFRONTERY shown by the
intruders.

SCENE 2
SAMAIRA: Later that day
(Asad, Saptaswa, Harshita and Paridhi are in the middle of a discussion about forging admission forms.
Heba, Pragati, Aryan will enter the stage and start the protest and hold placards
Vatsal, Anusha, Pamera, Ishaa, Raunak, Vridhi, Sourodeep will join behind them and act as if they are
protesting and then they'll parade out of the stage almost like chasing Asad, Harshita and the others)
[‘ONLY THE YOUNG’ plays in the background]

PARAMESH: Just as you saw in the skit performed right now, protesting against such a dishonest act of
corruption spreads awareness and people realize the reality of the situation. But did you all notice the
song in the background? Can anyone name the singer?

(Answer – Taylor Swift)

PARAMESH – Absolutely correct! The song is ‘Only the Young’ by the phenomenal singer and songwriter,
Taylor Swift. Critics have noted it to be Swift’s most politically charged song ever which talks about
various political issues and shootings which took place in the United States a couple of years back. The
song aims on proving the point that only today’s youth can make a change and create a better world. It
speaks about spreading awareness amongst the youth and teaching them how to protest against what’s
dishonest. This masterpiece by Taylor Swift can be directly connected to Anti-corruption, for only
“Gen-Z” can bring a pause to it in the long run. I'd like to ask Khushi to continue from here.

KHUSHI: Thank you Paramesh. Speaking a little more on her, Taylor Swift is one of the greatest musical
phenomena of all time. She has not shied away from saying or singing what she feels is correct. She also
stepped up into the political affairs of the United States and has used her platform of music to spread
awareness about important topics to a wider audience. Aren’t you intrigued regarding why we are
speaking of her all of a sudden?
This question will be answered when you realize her birthday falls on the 13th of December, just a couple
of days away!

PARAMESH: We decided to honor her talent, passion, wisdom and most importantly her willingness to
speak of topics and to spread awareness about common social problems to the world, by mentioning her
in this assembly of ours. So let us end this assembly on a positive, hopeful and interesting note.

(ONLY THE YOUNG PLACES IN LOW VOLUME)

ISHIKA: We would like to thank all of you for being an interactive audience, we would like to thank all the
teachers who mentored us and helped us to come up with this in such a short period of time. We would
also like to thank the tech team and the participants for participating! Plus, I assume you could notice
the use of some vocabulary words in our script which we're always encouraged to use. Hope we were
successful in conveying our message and hope you enjoyed it!
