B. COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
Cognitive psychology investigates internal mental processes, such as problem
solving, memory, learning, and language. It looks at how people think, perceive,
communicate, remember, and learn. It is closely related to neuroscience,
philosophy, and linguistics.
C. DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
This is the scientific study of systematic psychological changes that a person
experiences over the life span, often referred to as human development. It focuses
not only on infants and young children but also teenagers, adults, and older people.
E. FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to criminal
investigation and the law.
F. HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY
A physician often looks first at the biological causes of a disease, but a health
psychologist will focus on the whole person and what influences their health status.
This may include their socioeconomic status, education, and background, and
behaviors that may have an impact on the disease, such as compliance with
instructions and medication.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Elective Requirements:
The remaining unit requirements can be fulfilled through elective PSYCH courses. An
elective Psychology course is any PSYCH course that is 3 units or more (excluding
independent study, research and practicum). There are also four cognate courses
from other departments that count as PSYCH courses, not outside units. These
courses are: BIO 150, PEDS 106, PSYC 135, and PSYC 139 (all other PSYC courses
count as outside units). Students may count up to 10 units of psychology research
(PSYCH 195, 197, 198), independent study (PSYCH 194), and practica (PSYCH 281)
toward the Psychology major. Students who are teaching assistants for a
Psychology course or who are enrolled in the senior Honors Program are allowed up
to 15 units in independent study and research. Any units beyond these limits may be
counted toward the 180 units required for graduation.
CAN YOU GET A HUMAN
RESOURCES JOB WITH A PSYCH
DEGREE?
Although human resources specialists tend to have
degrees in human resources or business management,
most companies tend to be flexible when it comes to the
areas of study of candidates for human resources
positions. Not all colleges and universities have a human
resources undergraduate program and psychology is a
highly compatible field, as it trains students to study and
observe how people act and how they think. Ideally,
students who major in psychology should also have a minor
in human resources.
