COMPARISON

COMPARATIVES:
When you compare 2 things, 2 people, 2 groups, 2 activities, etc.

 (A) is MORE + POLYSYLLABIC ADJECTIVE /ADVERB (three


syllables or more) + THAN + (B)
Examples:

-Travelling by plane is more expensive than travelling by bus.


-English is more useful than Russian.
– My brother drives more carefully than I do.

 (A) is MONOSYLLABIC ADJECTIVE /ADVERB (one syllable)


+ ER + THAN + (B)
Examples:
-John is older than Peter. English is easier than Chinese.
You run faster than your sister.

**NOTE: You can use LESS + MONOSYLLABIC / POLYSYLLABIC


ADJECTIVES/ADVERBS + THAN to compare 2 things, people,
activities, etc. to express inferiority:

Examples:
Living in the city is less relaxing and less quiet than living in the
countryside.
Studying with a friend is less hard/difficult than studying alone.
SUPERLATIVES:
When you compare 3 or more things, people, groups, activities, etc. and
describe one of them.
 (A) is THE MOST + POLYSYLLABIC ADJECTIVE/ADVERB + (of /
in …)
Examples:
Travelling by plane is the MOST expensive means of transport of all.
Chinese is the MOST difficult language to learn.

 (A) is THE + MONOSYLLABIC ADJECTIVE /ADVERB + EST +


of/in…
Examples:
I am the youngest in my family.
Tucumán is the smallest province in Argentina.
