THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF
Once upon a time there were three Billy goat brothers. Who lived on a grassy hill-side near a river.
They had no master; and had no friends. The Billy Goat Brothers could do whatever pleased them.
“Woohouh” [Little] Yippee!! [middle] Careful you guys !! [Big]
This is Little Billy Goat Gruff! And this is Middle Billy Goat Gruff! And finally this is Big Billy Goat Gruff.
The eldest and largest of all the Billy Goat Gruff!
The three brothers lived happily on the hillside. Spending their days munching grass, dringking cool
water from river and playing with each other all day.
I might be the youngest, but I am the fastest… [Little]
Heh! Heh! Heh! He is too fast [middle]
Ha ha ha! Such a sweetheart! [Big]That he is! [Middle]
The two older brothers loved the Little Billy GoatGruff! Eventhough he was naughty and mischievous!
All was going well in their world. Until one day, one terrible day, when the brothers woke up from
the sleep and looked around to see that they had eaten all the grass on their hill-side.
Oh no! what will we eat now? Does that mean we have to wait until the grass grows back? [Little]
No! that will take up to a week! We will starve till then! [Big]
Oh no! I don’t want to starve! I’m hungry already [Little]
Hey Little one! Don’t worry! Look across the river! There is a lush meadow over there, there filled with
delicious grass! [Big]
That’s right! All we have to do is cross the bridge, and then we can eat the grass we want ! [Middle]
But crossing the wooden bridge over the river was dangerous and the Billy Goat Brothers knew it
very well. Because under that wooden bridge. Lived an awful and smelly troll, which was green in
colour, and had sharp pointy teeth, and a big red nose. The troll with eat fish for a living, but he
always hope that someday, he would be able to catch a goat and eat it.
Oh! I’m tired of eating fish! I need a break! I need a gitgat… umm… I mean a goat to eat! [Troll]
Who will cross the bridge first? [Middle]
Whoever tries to cross it first, will never make it cross the bridge because… because the troll will- ..
[Big]
That’s true! The troll will not spare the first goat. As your elder brother, it is my duty to sacrifice my
life for you! Let me go, so that you too can live! [Middle]
At this, the Little Billy Gruff spoke.
No need brother, for I have a plan! [Little]
A plan? [Big] a plan? [Middle]

59 I A1-SPEAKING ADULT LEARNERS

And so, Little Billy Goat Gruff told his brothers about his plan.
Are you sure about it? [Big] Absolutely! [Little]
Take care, Little! All the best! [Middle]
Little Billy Goat smiled and taking a deep breath, trotted down the hill-side. Trip…Trap….Trip…Trap…
went his hooves on the wooden bridge.
Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge? [Troll]
It is I, Little Billy Goat Gruff! I’m going over the river. To eat the grass on the other side! [Little]
Hahahhaha woahh … oh no… you are so not! [Troll]
Saying that, the horrible Troll climbed up on to the the bridge.
Instead, I have a better idea! I’m going to eat you... Hehe [Troll]
At that , Little Billy Goat Gruff shivered for a fleeting moment and then said :
I don’t think you would want to eat me! [Little]
Really, and why is that? [Troll]
You see, I am the smallest Billy Goat. I won’t make a very good meal, but if you wait for some more
time, my older brother Middle Billy Goat Gruff, will come along. He is much bigger than me. [Little]
Hmmm.. alright you may cross the bridge! [Troll]
And so, Little Billy Goat Gruff, clip clopped the rest of the way over the bridge and soon was in the
lush meadow.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the river, the two brothers saw that their youngest brother was safe.
It’s my turn now! [Middle] Careful! [Big]
And so, off went the Middle Billy Goat Gruff down the hill-side. Trip, trap, trip, trap, went his hooves
on the wooden bridge.
Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge? [Troll]
It is I, Middle Billy Goat Gruff! I’m going over the river. To join my brother on the meadow and eat the
yummy grass! [Middlle]
Hahahaha woahh … oh no… you are so not! [Troll]
And once again, the horrible Troll climbed up on to the the bridge.
Instead, I have a better idea! I……am going to eat you…. Heheheh [Troll]
At that , Middle Billy Goat Gruff just like his younger brother.. shivered for a moment and then said :
Well, you could eat me. But you would be making a mistake! [MIddle]
Really, and why is that? [Troll]

You see, if you just wait for a little longer, my older brother Big Billy Goat Gruff, will come along. He
is the bigest of all of us. And will make a hefty meal . [MIddle]
Hmmm.. very well! Be of with you! [Troll]
And so, Middle Billy Goat Gruff, clip clopped the rest of the way over the bridge and soon joined his
brother in the lush meadow.
Now on the hill-side. Big Billy Goat Gruff saw that both his brothers had made it safely across the
river…
And so, off he went down the hill… Trip, trap, trip, trap, went his hooves on the wooden bridge.
Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge? [Troll]
It is I, The Big Billy Goat Gruff! I’m going over the river. To join my brothers on the meadow and eat
the yummy grass! [Big]
No! you are not, for I’m going to gobble you up [Troll]
Well, you could. But didn’t my brothers tell you about my enhancement? [Big]
Your enhancement? [Troll]
Yes. You see. I have been blessed by a hermit. Anyone who sees my reflection in the water, will turn
into a handsome prince. You can too. And then you won’t need to eat me. Instead you will have your
own palace, maids, and princess at your service.
The troll liked the sound of that.
Me? A prince? Yeah I have always wanted to be one. Come on here now and show me your reflection.
[Troll]
Sure! [Big]
And just as the goat brothers had planned, Big Billy Goat Gruff rammed to the troll right off the
bridge, and down feel the stinky creature into the river.
No……booommmmsshh [Troll]
And so, a happy Big Billy Goat Gruff joined his brothers in the meadow. And as you can tell, they lived
happily there, munching on grass and drinking water from the river.
And so for the troll, he was never seen again; his greed got the better of him, for greed you see, is
the reason for one’s destruction.
