Alhamdulillah, we present you the 40 Hadith on Hajj and Umrah. This has been compiled to learn
about the virtues of these life changing and once in a lifetime journey as ordained by Allah Azzawajal
in the manner shown by Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬.

We hope these Ahadith which were carefully picked, would help you in your journey and be an
encouraging factor for you to perform Hajj and Umrah.

WHY 40 HADITH?
IN THE NAME OF ALLĀH, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Indeed all praise belongs to Allāh,
Lord of the realms, and may peace and blessings be invoked upon Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬, His Final Messenger,
and upon his pure family and noble companions.

The tradition of compiling and publishing works consisting of forty hadith is well established
throughout Islamic history. This practice is associated with the virtue of memorising and transmitting
forty hadith, which has been narrated through the authority of thirteen companions, in various
versions, that the Noble Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬mentioned, ‘Whosoever memorises and preserves for my
people forty hadith relating to his religion, Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Judgment as a jurist
and religious scholar.’ The noble narrators include Alī bin Abī Tālib, `Abd Allah bin Mas`ūd, Mu`āz bin
Jabal, Abū al-Dardā, Ibn `Umar, Ibn `Abbās, Abū Hurairah and Abū Sa`īd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased
with them all.

Whilst the lines of transmission are weak, the numerous narrations become strengthened when
considered collectively. Thus, many illustrious scholars have accepted the prophetic tradition and
authored compilations of forty hadith towards attaining the associated virtues. Scholars include
`Abdullah bin al-Mubārak, Muhammad bin Aslam al-Tūsī, al-Hasan bin Sufyān al-Nasā`wi, Abū Bakr al-
ājurī, Abū Bakr bin Ibrāhīm al-Asfahānī, al-Darqutnī, al-Hākim, Abū Nu`aym, Abū `Abd al-Rahmān al-
Salamī, Abū Sa`īd al-Mālīnī, Abu `Uthmān al-Sābūnī, `Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Ansārī, Abū Bakr al-
Bayhaqī, and Imam an-Nawawī, whose compilation is widely acclaimed today, may Allah have Mercy
on them all.

The various compilations consider different topics of religion; some from the foundations of
faith, some associated with the branches of religion, some on asceticism, social etiquettes or manners,
but all solely for the purpose of attaining the pleasure of The Creator. Likewise, this publication

presents forty hadith pertaining to Hajj, its virtues, merits and ritual obligations. It is hoped that the
sayings of the Noble Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬along with the translation will be a means of benefit for the reader,

1. UMRAH AND RAMADAN

‫عن ابن عباس ان النيب قال فعمرة يف رمضان تقضي حجة أو حجة معي‬
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas RA that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said that:

"Umrah in Ramadhan is equivalent (in reward) to Hajj"

or He said: "To Hajj with me"

2. RETURN LIKE A NEWBORN

َِِّ ‫ول من ح َّج‬ ِ َ َ‫أََب هريـرَة ـ رضى هللا عنه ـ ق‬

Abu Huraira RA narrates, I heard the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬say:

"Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah's, and

does not have sexual relations with his wife, nor does
evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all
sins) like the day his mother gave birth to him."

3. HAJJ FOR ALLAH

‫عن ايب ُهريرة قال قال رسول هللا صلي هللا عليه وسلم من حج فلم يرفث وََل‬
‫يفسق غفرله ما تقدم من ذنبه‬

It is narrated Abu Hurairah RA that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

"Whoever performs Hajj for Allah, and he does not

have sexual relations and commit sins, then his
previous sins will be forgiven."
Tirmidhi

4. REMOVAL OF SINS
‫ اتبعوا بني‬: ‫عن عبدهللا بن مسعود قال قال رسول هللا صلي هللا عليه وسلم‬
‫احلج والعمرة فإهنما ينفيان الفقر والذنوب كما ينفي الكري خبث احلديد‬
‫والذهب و الفضة وليس للحجة املربورة ثواب اال اجلنة‬
Abdullah Ibn Masud RA narrated that Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Alternate between Hajj and Umrah; for these remove

poverty and sins just as the bellows remove filth from
iron, gold and silver - and there is no reward for Hajj al
Mabrur except Jannah.”

Abu Huraira RA narrated: The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was asked,

"Which is the best deed?" He said, "To believe in Allah

and His Messenger." He was then asked, "Which is the
next (in goodness)?" He said, "To participate in Jihad in
Allah's Cause." He was then asked, "Which is the
next?" He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur" i.e Hajj
accepted by Allah.

6. REWARD OF PARADISE

Abu Huraira RA narrated: Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said,

"(The performance of) `Umra is an expiation for the

sins committed (between it and the previous one). And

the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah)

is nothing except Paradise."

I know how the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬used to chant (Talbiya) and

it was: 'Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaika la
sharika Laka labbaik, Inna-l-hamda wan-ni'mata Laka
walmulk, La sharika Laka'.

8. ROCKS, TREES OR MUD

‫اّلِل صلى هللا عليه وسلم " َما ِم ْن ُم ْسلٍِم يـُلَِيب‬ َِّ ‫ول‬ُ ‫ال َر ُس‬ َ َ‫ ق‬،‫َع ْن َس ْه ِل بْ ِن َس ْع ٍد‬

" ‫ِم ْن َها ُهنَا َوَها ُهنَا‬
Sahl Ibn Sa'd RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

"There is no Muslim who says the Talbiyah except that

whatever is to his right and left - from the rocks, or
trees, or mud - until the end of the land, from here to
there, say the Talbiyah"

9. DEATH IN IHRAM
‫َّيب صلى هللا عليه وسلم َخَّر َر ُج ٌل ِم ْن‬ ِ ِ‫ َع ِن الن‬- ‫ رضى هللا عنهما‬- ،‫اس‬ ٍ َّ‫َع ِن ابْ ِن َعب‬
‫ال "ا ْغ ِسلُوهُ ِِبَ ٍاء َو ِس ْد ٍر َوَك ِفنُوهُ ِيف ثَـ ْوبَـْي ِه َوالَ ُُتَ ِمُروا َرأْ َس ُه‬ َ ‫ات فَـ َق‬
َ ‫ص فَ َم‬
َ ُ َ
ِ‫بعِ ِريِه فَـوق‬

*"‫اّلِلَ يَـْبـ َعثُهُ يَـ ْوَم الْ ِقيَ َام ِة ُملَبِيًا‬

َّ ‫فَِإ َّن‬
Ibn Abbas RA reported that a person had fallen down from his camel (in a
state of Ihram) and his neck broke and he died. Thereupon Allah's
Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Bathe him with water mixed with the leaves of the

lote tree and shroud him in his two (pieces of) cloth

(Ihram), and do not cover his head for Allah will raise
him on the Day of Resurrection reciting Talbiya.”

10. EMANCIPATION FROM HELL

Aa’isha RAH narrated that Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“There is no day when Allah emancipates more

servants from Hell than the Day of 'Arafah. He draws
near, then praises them to the angels saying: What do
these people want?”

11. PRAYING IN MASJID AN-NABAWI

‫صالَةٌ ِيف َم ْس ِج ِدي َه َذا‬ َ " ‫ال‬

“A prayer in my mosque is a thousand times more

excellent than a prayer in any other mosque, except
Masjid al-Haram (Mosque of the Ka'ba).”

It is narrated from Talha Ibn Ubaydullah Ibn Kariyz RA that the Messenger
of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

"Shaytan is not considered more abased/lowly or more

cast out or more contemptible or more angry on any
day than on the Day of Arafah. That is only because he
sees the descent of the Mercy and Allah's disregard for
great wrong actions. That is except from what he was
shown on the Day of Badr." Someone said, "What was
he shown on the Day of Badr, Messenger of Allah?" He
said, "Didn't he see Jibril arranging the ranks of the
angels?"

13. MOST EXCELLENT DUA

َ‫اّلِلُ َو ْح َدهُ ال‬ ُ ‫ض ُل َما قُـْل‬ َ ْ‫ُّعاء ُد َعاءُ يَـ ْوم َعَرفَةَ َوأَف‬

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah Ibn Kariyz RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah
‫ ﷺ‬said,

"The most excellent duaa is the duaa on the Day of

Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before
me have said, is 'There is no god but Allah, He is alone
and He has no partner’."

14. JIHAD FOR WOMEN

ِ ‫اّلِل أَالَ نَـ ْغزوا وُُن‬

ْ َ‫ني ـ رضى هللا عنها ـ قَال‬ َ ‫َع ْن َعائ َشةَ أُِم الْ ُم ْؤمن‬
َ‫ت َعائِ َشةُ فَال‬ْ َ‫ فَـ َقال‬." ‫ور‬
ٌ ‫ َح ٌّج َمْبـُر‬،‫احلَ ُّج‬ ْ ‫اجلِ َه ِاد َوأ‬
ْ ُ‫َْجَلُه‬ ْ ‫َح َس ُن‬
ْ ‫ال "لَ ُك َّن أ‬ َ ‫َم َع ُك ْم فَـ َق‬
‫اّلِل صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬ َِّ ‫ول‬ ِ ‫احل َّج بـ ْع َد إِ ْذ ََِس ْعت ه َذا ِمن رس‬

Aa’isha RAH narrated: I said, "O Allah's Messenger ‫ !ﷺ‬Shouldn't we
participate in Holy battles and Jihad along with you?" He replied,

"The best and the most superior Jihad (for women) is

Hajj which is accepted by Allah." Aa’isha added: Ever
since I heard that from Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬I have
been determined not to miss Hajj.”

15. NAFL HAJJ

. " ٌ‫اح َد ًة فَ َم ْن َز َاد فَـ ُه َو تَطَُّوع‬ َ َ ْ َ َ َ‫ُك ِل َسنَة أ َْو َمَّرًة َواح َد ًة ق‬
Aqra' Ibn Habib RA narrated: Ibn Abbas said: Aqra' Ibn Habis asked the
Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬saying: Messenger of Allah is Hajj to be performed annually or
only once? He replied:

“Only once, and if anyone performs it more often, he

performs a supererogatory act.”

16. HASTEN FOR HAJJ!

“He who intends to perform Hajj should hasten to do

so!”

17. VISIT THREE MASAJID

Abu Hurairah RA reported the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬saying

“Don’t make a journey (to visit any masjid) except

towards three masjids: The sacred masjid (of Makkah),
this masjid of mine and Al-Aqsa.”

18. HAJJ AS JIHAD

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Umair RA that a man said:

"O Abu Abdur-Rahman, why do I only see you touching

these two corners?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of
Allah ‫ ﷺ‬say: 'Touching them erases sins.' And I heard
him say: 'whoever circumambulates seven times, it is
like freeing a slave."

Ibn Abbas RA narrates that on the day of Arafah, a young man who was
the companion of Rasoolullah ‫ﷺ‬, sharing his camel had cast his eyes
around staring at the women. Whereupon Rasoolullah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“O son of my brother, this is such a day when whoever

controls his hearing, his sins forgiven’.

of yours. No sinner commits a sin but it is against
himself. No father is to be punished for the sins of his
child, and no child is to be punished for the sins of his
father. Satan has despaired of ever being worshipping
in this land of yours, but he will be obeyed in some
matters that you regard as insignificant, and he will be
content with that. All the blood feuds of the days of
ignorance are abolished, and the first of them that I
abolish is the blood feud of Harith bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib,
who was nursed amongst Banu Laith and killed by
Hudhail. All the usuries of the days of ignorance are
abolished, but you will have your capital. Do not wrong
others and you will not be wronged. O my nation, have
I conveyed (the message)?’ (He asked this three times.)
They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘O Allah, bear witness!’ three
times.”

Jannah." And Aa’isha RA added: "Indeed, Allah, The
Mighty and Powerful boasts about those who
circumambulate (the Ka'bah)"

Ibn Ubaid bin Umair RA narrated from his father: "Ibn Umar was clinging
on the two corners (in a manner that I had not seen any of the
Companions of the Prophet doing) so I said 'I do it because I heard the
Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬saying:

"Touching them atones for sins." And I heard him

saying: "Whoever performs Tawaf around this House
seven times and he keeps track of it, then it is as if he
has freed a slave. And I heard him saying: "One foot is
not put down, nor another raised except that Allah
removes a sin from him and records a good merit for
him."

Abu Hurayrah RA reported that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“There are three individuals who are in the security of

Allah. A man who leaves his house and goes to a
Masjid from the Masaajid of Allah, the Exalted, a man
who goes out on an expedition to fight in the path of
Allah, the Exalted, and a man who departs for the
Greater Pilgrimage.”

34. A PILLAR OF ISLAM

:‫عن ابن عمر قال قال رسول هللا صلي هللا عليه و سلم (بِن االسالم علي مخس‬
‫شهادة ان ال اله اال هللا و ان حممدا رسول هللا و اقام الصالة و ايتاء الزكاة و احلج‬

Ibn umar RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said

"Islam is based on five (principles), to testify that there

is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger
of Allah, to establish the prayers, to pay zakat, to

perform Hajj and to fast during the month of

Ramadhaan.”

Ibn Umar RA reports that a certain man once asked Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬

“What is the true condition and appearance of a Haji?”

To which Rasulullah replied “The true Hajji is the one
who come with dishevelled hair and clothes covered in
dust and moist with sweat.” Then another man
inquired o Rasulullah “Which Hajj is the most
significant?” Rasulullah replied “The best Hajj is the
one in which the voice is raised loudly repeatedly
reading labbayk and the excessive shedding of the
blood if the sacrificed animal.”

36. BLACK STONE AS A WITNESS

ُ ُ‫ لهُ َعينان ي‬، ‫يوم القيامة‬
َ ُ‫وهللا ليبعثَهُ هللا‬
ٍ ُ‫عبدهللا بن عباس على َمن استلمه‬
‫حبق‬ َ
Ibn Abbaas RA the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said about the black stone,

“Verily Allah shall raise it on the day of qiyaamah, it

shall have two eyes with which it sees and a tongue
with which it will speak, bearing witness in favour of
everyone who did kiss it with truth and faith.”

37. DYING AS A CHRISTIAN OR JEW

Hazrat Ali (RA) says Rasulullah' ‫ ﷺ‬said:

"Whoever possesses the provisions (for the

journey) and the means of transport to bring him
to the House of Allah yet he does not perform Hajj,

then there is no difference in him dying as a Jew or

as a Christian."

38. THE MULTAZAM

‫ ما يدعو به‬،‫ ما بني الركن و املقام ملتزم‬: ‫ أن النيب قال‬، ‫ابن عباس‬
‫صاحب عاهة إال برا‬
Ibn Hazrat Abbaas R.A says: 'I heard the messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬say:

“The Multazam is a place where duaas are

accepted. Whenever a person prays to Allah at this
spot, Allah grants his prayer”.

39. RUKHNUL YAMAANI

‫ال " ُوكِ َل بِِه َسْبـعُو َن َملَ ًكا فَ َم ْن‬ َ َ‫َّيب ـ صلى هللا عليه وسلم ـ ق‬ َّ ‫َح َّدثَِِن أَبُو ُهَريْـَرَة أ‬

‫الدنْـيَا َح َسنَةً َوِيف‬ ِ ‫الدنْـيا و‬
ُّ ‫يف‬ِ ‫ة‬ ‫ي‬ِ‫ال اللَّه َّم إِِّن أَسأَلُك الْع ْفو والْعاف‬
َ َ َ َ َ َََ َ ْ ُ َ َ‫ق‬

ََ‫ قَالُوا ِآمين‬- ‫اب النَّا ِر‬َ ‫اآلخَرِة َح َسنَةً َوقنَا َع َذ‬
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) reports that Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Seventy angels are placed over the Ruknul

Yamaani. When anyone says: 'O Allah, grant me
pardon and safety from danger and sin in this
world and in the hereafter; Our Lord grant us the

righteous of this world and of the hereafter, and

save us from the punishment of hell", then they
say: 'Aameen'.

40. MERCY FOR THOSE WHO SHAVE

َ َ‫اّلِل ق‬ ِ ‫ قَالُوا والْم َق‬." ‫اللَّه َّم ارح ِم الْمحلِ ِقني‬
َُ َ َ ُ َ َ َ ُ َْ ُ
" ‫ص ِرين‬ ِ َِّ ‫ول‬ ِ ِِ
َ ‫ال " َوالْ ُم َق‬ َ َ‫اّلِل ق‬ َ ‫ين ََي َر ُس‬َ ‫ قَالُوا َوالْ ُم َقص ِر‬." ‫ني‬
َ ‫الْ ُم َحلق‬
Abdullah Ibn Umar RA reports that during the farewell Hajj,
Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Ya Allah! Have mercy on those who shaved”.

Sahabah requested: “And on those who trimmed
as well ya Rasulullah!” He Sallallahu Alayhi
Wasallam said: “Ya Allah! Have mercy on the
shavers”. They said: “And the trimmers as well ya
Rasulullah!” He ‫ ﷺ‬said: “And on the trimmers”.
