Subject or Topic: Resources Review and Test
After reviewing the resources unit, the third grade students will be able to demonstrate their
knowledge of resources by playing a resources Kahoot game.
Prerequisites
● Knowledge of natural resources.
● Knowledge of conservation.
● Knowledge of nonrenewable and renewable resources.
● A basic understanding of recycling.
● Knowledge of where resources come from.
● Knowledge that everyday items come from natural resources.
● Basic understanding of what things are made out of/where things come from.
Key Vocabulary
● Communities: Groups of people living in the same place or having a particular
characteristic in common.
● Conserving: the act of protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment
for future generations.
● Recycling: is the process of converting waste materials into new products or materials.
● Renewable resource: A resource that can be replaced.
● Nonrenewable resource: A resource that cannot be replaced.
● Flow resource: A resource that is renewable but cannot be accessed at all times.
● Natural Resources: Things found in nature that are useful to people.
● Fossil fuels: Are remains of organisms that lived long ago.

●
Content/Facts
● Communities use natural resources everyday.
○ Communities rely on natural resources such as freshwater, crops and livestock
for food and water.
○ Communities use natural resources such as coal, oil, natural gas, wind, and
solar power to generate energy.
○ Communities use natural resources such as wood, stone, and clay to build
homes and buildings.
○ Communities use natural resources such as plants, minerals, and water for
medicinal and therapeutic purposes.
○ Communities use natural resources such as parks, beaches, forests, and lakes for
recreational activities and to attract tourists.
○ Communities use natural resources such as cotton, wool, and silk to produce
clothing and textiles.
○ Communities use natural resources such as metals, minerals, and chemicals to
manufacture goods and products.
● Communities can conserve natural resources by…
○ reduce, reuse and recycle.
○ conserve water
○ preserve habitats
○ Use sustainable transportation
○ Use renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power.
● Non Renewable resources are limited, once we use them up they cannot be replaced.
● Because nonrenewable resources are limited we must do things to conserve these
resources. We can conserve them by…
○ Traditional power plants burn fossil fuels to create electricity, so it is a good
idea to turn off any device that uses electricity when it isn’t being used.
○ Use alternative energy sources like solar energy and solar panels.
○ recycle material when possible.
○ repurpose materials instead of throwing them out.
○ Don’t drive unless you have to, carpool, or use public transportation.
● Recycling is another way we can conserve earth’s natural resources. Items that can be
recycled include..
○ paper and cardboard
○ glass
○ plastic
○ metal
○ electronics
○ batteries
○ clothing and textiles.
○ Food waste through composting.
● There are three types of natural resources.
● One type is renewable resources. These resources can be replaced like trees and
vegetables.
● The second type is nonrenewable resources. These resources cannot be replaced like oil
and coal.
● The third type is flow resources. These resources are renewable but cannot be accessed
all the time like wind and sunlight.
● Natural resources are things found in nature that are useful to people.
● Humans use natural resources everyday.
● Natural resources are all around us.
● Fossil fuels are remains of organisms that lived long ago. Organisms are plants,
animals, and other living things.
● Ore is a mineral which has a metal inside it.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies
(Day one)
1. We will begin by having the groups explain their poster they created, what their topic
was, the phrase they came up with, and how they designed their poster.
a. Each group will give a quick explanation, all groups will go, there are 6 groups
total.
2. After each group has gone, I will tell the students to get out their Ipads. We are going to
be reviewing for our unit test tomorrow.
3. I will remind them that the test will be just like the pretest we took a few weeks ago.
Development/Teaching Approaches
1. For the review I will have students go onto Kahoot.
2. We will go through all the questions carefully. If I see a question that the students were
unsure about I will be sure to address that confusion immediately.
3. The review questions for the review are as follows.
a. What is a natural resource? Things found in nature that are useful to people.
b. What is a renewable resource? Resources that can be replaced.
c. What is a nonrenewable resource? Resources that cannot be replaced.
d. What is a flow resource? Are renewable but they cannot be used all of the time.
e. Water is a… Renewable resource
f. Minerals are a… Nonrenewable resource
g. The sun is a… Flow resource
h. What happens if we waste nonrenewable resources? There will be none of those
resources left for future generations.
i. How can a community help save natural resources? Turn off the water when it
is not being used.
j. A lake is not a natural resource found in a community. False
k. A tree is considered a renewable resource. True
l. We must use up our nonrenewable resources as quickly as possible. False
4. After the review I will tell the students that this review was very similar to the test you
will be taking tomorrow.
5. I will tell the students that they will get some more practice tomorrow morning with
their morning work.
6. I will hand out a unit review paper for students to work on as morning work the next
day.
(Day 2)
7. Before we take our test we will begin by reviewing the worksheet they did for morning
work as another quick review before the test. I will clear up any confusion with the
review if there are any.
8. I will have students who move desks for tests move and the rest of the students will get
test blockers.
9. I will hand out the test. They are not to start the test until I’ve gone over all instructions
with them.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies
1. I will explain that for questions 1-4 they are matching the word with the correct
definition.
2. I will explain that for questions 5-9 they are multiple choice so pick the best answer.
Pick only one.
3. I will explain that for questions 10-12 they are true or false. Circle A for true and B for
false.
4. I will explain that for question 13 they are listing three items that are made out of a
natural resource, like what we did when we brought materials from home. You are not
just listing natural resources. I will give bonus points to students who list three items
and tell me what natural resource they came from.
5. I will tell them they can begin, if they have any questions they can raise their hands if
they have any questions. They may place their test in the finished test bin when they
are done.
6. I will walk around, assist and supervise and they take the test.
7. The test should take the rest of the period.
Accommodations/Differentiation
● Learning support students will have their test modified.
● Learning support students will have their test read to them.
● Our Spanish speaking students test will be translated into Spanish and modified.
Reflective Response:
Additional reflection/thought
Overall this lesson went very well. I was so presently surprised and happy to see student
growth from their pretest to the post test and how much they learned from my unit.
