products. Country standards, espe-
cially for electrical safety products like
breakers and ground fault protectors,
vary from country to country. Not
only might the standards be different
because of wiring codes, but also there
may be significant differences such as
differing voltages, frequency, and
other types of ground returns.
This book covers monitoring and
protection equipment used for floating
(unearthed) power systems. These
types of situations are typical in many
medical, mining, and rail car applica-
tions. The author describes the differ-
ent types of power delivery systems in
many countries and explains the differ-
ences nicely using diagrams. He then
describes the types of equipment used
to monitor the insulation integrity of
the power system. These types of sys-
tems provide increased operational
reliability, fire and accident preven-
tion when used in floating ground ap-
plications.
This book would be useful to some-
one who designs electrical installations,
especially international applications.
This is also a nice reference on floating
neutral power systems. This book
would be of interest to anybody who is
involved with the construction and op-
eration of floating electrical power sys-
tems (IT).

This recent book covers the basics of
pulse power technology including
components such as insulation, trans-
mission lines, switches, and diodes.
The authors begin by introducing ca-
pacitor-bank energy storage, specifi-
cally Marx bank generators. Coverage
of insulators, focused on short pulse
waveforms, includes gases, liquids, and
solids. This is quite basic but there are
many graphs and tables of data at short
breakdown times, predominantly with
gases. There is also a relatively large
section on surface flashover and triple
point effects. The next chapter deals
with transmission line basics, imped-
ance, traveling waves, reflected waves,
etc. There is a comprehensive section
on Blumlein lines with matching diode
loads, stacked lines, and magnetically
insulated lines. High-power opening
switches, in the next chapter, capable of
handing tera-watts of power with nano-
second operation are detailed. Many
types of switches are described: spark
gaps, surface discharge, rim-fire, water
switches, semiconductor, plasma gun,
reflex, and magnetic switches.
There are plenty of illustrations
showing the critical details of each type
of switch and detailed descriptions are
given for the operating principles.
Chapter 6 gets into the detailed opera-
tion of the diode and particle beam.
Basic background in cold cathode field
emission along with explosive electron
emission from surfaces gives a good
background to the reader in these im-
portant areas critical to diode opera-
tion and particle beams. The last two
chapters cover applications and diag-
nostics. Applications range from parti-
cle beam generators, electromagnetic
pulse simulators, and rail guns. The
short chapter on diagnostics gives a
few practical tips on measuring pulsed
current and voltage.
This well-illustrated and concise
book is intended a reference book for
pulse power practitioners, and as a
graduate-level textbook in pulse power
engineering.
