There are 225 senior students studying Computer Science and 169 senior students studying
Mathematics at a university. According to an academic survey, 20% of these students tell they
will pursue a postgraduate degree, 8% will start a business, 52% will get employed, 15% will
start freelancing and the remaining students will become research assistants.

a) Write down a row matrix to represent the percentages, in decimal form, of senior
students who will choose one of the five routes after graduation.

b) The number of senior students studying Computer Science and Mathematics can be
represented by a column matrix . Hence, calculate the product = . Give each
element of the matrix correct to the nearest whole number.

c) In the context of this question, explain what the element 1,5 means.

The cost for textbooks per year for a computer science student is $1245 and for a Mathematics
student is $889.

d) Write down a matrix calculation that gives the total cost for textbooks paid by all the
senior students studying Computer Science and Mathematics.

e) Hence calculate the total cost for all the textbooks. Give your answer correct to the
nearest dollar.

Hotel rooms in Alpha Hotel, Bravo Hotel and Charlie Hotel all offer nightly rates on Double,
Superior and Luxury rooms as shown:

120 175 225

125 200 275
2 + 40 5 9 − 20

where the columns represent the type of rooms offered for all 3 hotels and the rows represent
the costs of different types of rooms for each hotel.

A company wants to book a total of 22 rooms for one night. It would cost $3230 at Alpha, $3575
at Bravo and $(32 + 200) at Charlie.

Find the costs of Double, Superior and Luxury rooms charged by the Charlie Hotel.
