Response to the film Axuni

Tribes and people from other regions have always been treated differently in comparison to
the rest of the community. After watching the movie, I was really surprised to see the
different ways in which people are treated only because they belong to a certain community
and are living in a city where they supposedly do not belong. We talk about diversity in our
country but there is still so much hate towards people from different tribes, it is sad that the
general perception of them to be different and not part of our country, still exists in the 21 st
century. The movie was conceptualized very well and brought out the true colours of how
people who recognize themselves as northeastern, are in a place like Delhi where they are
treated as foreigners. The movie was not a big blockbuster but actually talks about a lot of big
social issues that needs to be bought to light in our country. The movie is about these friends
from northeast India who are preparing a pungent delicacy for a wedding party of their friend
and they are finding it difficult to make it because of the smell and people are not letting them
make it. They have to do it in a day and it also entails the difficulties they face every day.
In the starting scenes we see one of the girls going to the African girl’s house to warn her
about the smell of the food and the African girl recognizes her as the girl who lives with the
two other northeastern girls. Here the issue was that the girl was also from the northeastern
but her features were not the same as the other girls, which is why most of the people there
would not even identify her as a northeastern girl. She would correct people again and again
but they still were used to the stereotype of all northeastern people having a particular look
that she did not have.
