Worded Questions

1. Pamela had one metre of ribbon. She cut it in half. How long is each
ribbon? 50 cm

Solution: 1 m = 100 cm
So, half of 100 is 50 cm.

2. On the shelf there were 25 books. If 7 books were taken off, how
many books are left? 18 books

Solution: 25 – 7 = 18

3. Drew is 134 cm tall and I am 137cm tall. What is the combined


height? 271 cm

Solution: 134 cm + 137 cm = 271 cm

4. Dad planted 3 rows of carrots. If 5 carrots are planted in each row,


how many carrots are altogether? 15 carrots

Solution: 3 rows of 5 carrots = 3 + 3 + 3 = 3  5 = 15

5. A pencil costs $1.20. What is the cost of five pencils? $6

Solution: $1.20  5 = $6.00

VOLUME

 Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object.

We can measure the volume by counting the centicubes.

Example)

A B
Volume = 5 centicubes Volume = 4 centicubes

Therefore the model A has a greater volume than model B.
