1.0 Scope

The pickling is a procedure that is finalized to remove the superficial oxide of the metal that
can be caused, for example, from the thermal alteration generated by the machining, from
the oxidation generated by atmospherically agents or from contamination by other metal.
Our procedure consider the pickling in immersion with the use of hydrofluoric acid
The passivation is a treatment indicate to restore the natural passive layer of stainless steel
duple and super duplex, with a chemical procedure that accelerate and homogenize the
formation of a passive and protective layer.

2.0 Applicability
Reference to ASTM A380.
The applicability of this procedure consider machined part of each shape, dimension and
type in stainless steel, duplex, superduplex and titanium.

3.0 Procedure

3.1 Pickling will be done in accordance to customer requirements in accordance to ASTM

A380 in accordance to below instruction:
 If necessary, the material will be degreased dipping in a first tank with water plus
an alkaline solution based on sodium hydroxide and surfactants at a temperature
between 70°C and 80°C, subsequently rinsed in a tank with water at ambient
temperature.
 The material will be dipped in a tank containing the following solution:
- Hydrofluoric acid 40% (by Torchiani S.r.l.) 8% ÷ 10% (Pickling agent)
- Nitric acid (42Bè by Torchiani S.r.l.) 15% ÷ 18% (Passivation agent)
- Water 72% ÷ 77%
- Temperature of the solution 30° ÷ 35°C

3.2 The surface to be pickled will be maintained in contact with the solution, continuously
agitated for a time between 15 and 30 minutes or at the time that, after visual
inspection, all the surface will be completed pickled.

3.3 Finally, the material will be washed with hot water at high pressure and consequently
dry.
