Number System – A3

Topics Covered in today’s Lecture:

1. Decimal Representation of Rational Numbers

p
a) Terminating Decimal: Ends after a finite number of digits. A rational number is
q

expressible as a terminating decimal only when prime factors of q are 2 or 5 or both.

b) Non – Terminating Decimal: A decimal in which a digit or a set of digits is repeated

periodically, is called a repeating, or a recurring decimal.

In a recurring decimal, we place a bar over the first block of the repeating digits and

omit the other repeating blocks.

2. Converting Recurring Decimal to Fractions

p
Examples: Convert 6.357 into the form of
q

Let x = 6.357

10x = 63.57 -------------①

1000x = 6357.57 -------②

Equation ② - ① 

1000x – 10x = 6357.57 - 63.57

 990x = 6294

6294 1049
 x= =
990 165
