SELF-LEARNING MODULE IN ENGLISH 9

QUARTER 3- Module 1
Connecting to the World
What I Need to Know
Distance is being defied by information technology. With the fast growing social media,
everyone can now travel, reach other places and connect to people around the world virtually.
Through various social media brought by technological advancement, we are being
exposed to many information that are helpful with our research, studies and daily lives although
it may sometimes be misleading resulting to many victims of fake news, prejudices or even
biases. Thus, we have to be more observant and critical in our judgment with what we gather
from the internet by evaluating the source of our information. It is imperative that we learn to
assess facts from opinions and know how to differentiate biases from prejudices.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this module you should be able to:

Lesson 1 Through Technology

What’s In
As students, you are able to read, watch, and listen to a lot of information
through technology. These information may influence you to believe certain ideas and push
you to take some form of action. Some information may also dissuade you from believing or
doing other things.
Your ability to distinguish biases from prejudices will greatly help you in
extracting information. Thus, it enables you to judge a certain material and develop logical
opinion.

What’s New
The dictionary defines bias as a tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc
are better than others that usually results in treating some people unfairly.
Example: You are old fashioned and with no taste to the current style of clothing.
The statement is based from personal interest or opinion that may vary from other’s
opinion.
Prejudice is having or showing an unfair dislike of a person or group because of some
characteristics (as race or religion)
Example: You are not welcome here because you are black.
The statement is a form of discrimination against a person’s color. It may also include a
person’s background, religion, race, belief, etc.
Directions: Recognize the statements that suggest biased opinion from prejudiced statement.
Write B if the statement is bias and P if it is prejudice.
1. All women belong to kitchen.
2. The girl’s outfit does not look good on her.
3. White people are all racist.
4. These desserts taste horrible.
5. All older adults are slow and incompetent.
What is It

Read the poem

The Telephone
by Edward Field

My happiness depends on an electric appliance

And I do not mind giving it so much credit
With life in this city being what it is
Each person separated from friends
By a tangle of subways and buses
Yes my telephone is my joy
It tells me that I am in the world and wanted
It rings and I am alerted to love or gossip
I go comb my hair which begins to sparkle
Without it I was like a bear in a cave
Drowsing through a shadowy winter
It rings and spring has come
I stretch and amble out into the sunshine
Hungry again as I pick up the receiver
For the human voice and the good news of friends

For Conversation, Press #1

by Michael Alvear

A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped

talking to one another.
I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting
our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and–poof!–I
became invisible, absent from the conversation because of a gadget designed to make
communication easier.
The park was filled with people talking on their cell phones. They were passing other
people without looking at them, saying hello, noticing their babies or stopping to pet their
puppies. Evidently, the untethered electronic voice is preferable to human contact.
The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to
you feel absent.
