Les 'non action verbs' ou 'stative verbs’ ou « non-continuous verbs » sont ceux
qui expriment :
-une idée abstraite :be, believe,know, need, understand,
remember, think, imagine, forget, mean, exist...
-les émotions : like, dislike, love, hate, fear, envy, care...

VERBES D’ACTION ET -la perception : hear, see, feel, smell, taste, sound, seem…
VERBES D’ETAT -la possession : own, have, belong, possess..

La plupart des « stative verbs » ne peuvent s’employer à une forme progressive


on dit : I love my mother (et non : I am loving my mother)
On dit : I need a new car (et non : I am needing a new car)

Certains de ces verbes peuvent avoir plusieurs sens, il arrive alors que l'on puisse
utiliser les formes progressives
Ex : Sarah looks beautiful ( Sarah est jolie)
Mais : The detective is looking for a clue ( le détective est en train de chercher un
indice)
