CHAPTER I: PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Students spend a significant amount of time sitting at a desk, reading books and

working on homework till late at night. Students' busy schedules leave them with little time

to participate in sports. Encouraging children to participate in regular physical activity

improves their health and fitness while also making them feel better. Sports activities are

critical for the development of students. Researchers have begun to notice the value of

participating in sporting activities, and the number of research in this field has increased

(Silliman et al., 2004). Participating in sporting activities has been linked to decreased levels

of depressive symptoms, increased enjoyment, and life satisfaction, as well as improved

student health (Menec, 2003; Ruuskanen and Ruopilla, 1995). Aside from that, students will

make more friends, gain more life experience, and have more prospects for education and a

future in sports by engaging in sports. It is vital for them to free themselves from hard

academic work by participating in sports activities.

Sport and physical exercise give students with fresh chances to interact and engage

with one another, fostering strong friendships and assisting in making the classroom a happy

learning environment. Students who participate in curricular and extra-curricular physical

activities demonstrate a greater commitment to school as well as an increased desire and

ability to participate in school life; team-based sports can be especially beneficial in bridging

divides because they instill a shared sense of identity, fellowship, and purpose among

participants. Furthermore, the attractiveness of sport and its inclusive and participatory

nature may be used as a significant entrance point to persuade marginalized kids to

participate and create inclusive behaviors. Sport programs in schools that are intentionally

created with specific development objectives may also be utilized to boost learning in a

variety of areas, including gender. Sport and physical activity in schools may provide gender
2

diverse role models for young women and girls who are still under-represented in school

sports and physical education.

Sport and physical exercise in schools may help kids build skills, knowledge, and

networks that will help them thrive not just in the classroom, but also at home, in the

community, and in their professions. Active students are more likely to have the desire and

ability to seek further education as their skills and confidence grow. Sport and physical

activities help kids to gain skills and internalize values that are appealing to employers, and

studies suggest that as a result, they are more likely to secure high-quality jobs. According to

studies, kids who participate in extracurricular sports are more likely to be active members of

their communities and to be involved in social and charity concerns.

Sport and games become crucial roles in helping the development of human minds

and body especially for students. Students nowadays are broadly exposed to many sport

activities. With the awareness of healthy life style and the facilities provided surrounding

their living areas, most students could choose the best sport that suit them well. Parents

should encourage their children to get involved in sports from the early childhood. Sports

activities could prevent them from involving in negative activities, yet increasing the quality

of life. However, there are several barriers to stop students from actively involved in sport.

These include the current life style whereby more students are interested in playing game

online instead on the real field. Soon or later these students might encounter health problem

such as back ache, blurry eyes, and headache and dizziness. Other than that, they might also

expose to pornography, gambling, copywriting and cut out from social community.

Advancement of technology is good but there must be a balance between the use of

the technology and the quality of life. As sport is part of the method of contributing towards

the good quality of life, students must be persuaded to join the sport activities for their own

sake. Sport could help them stay healthy; prevent them from joining crime activities;
3

promoting social bonding; and increase students’ personality or characteristics. These are all

contributing to the good quality of life. With the good support from the government and

private organizations on sport activities, more and more facilities and financial support has

been given to schools to pull the interest of students on sport. Therefore, students should grab

the opportunity to involve in sport not only for the sake of individual wellness but also to

enjoy the benefits of doing well in sport activities.

It was observed that some high school students in Kananga National High School

participate in sports. For instance, there is evidence that high school athletic programs are

expanding. It is said that participation in sports activities promote a wide range of social,

physical, and intellectual skills, and more beneficial for mathematics and science grades,

compared to English and language grades, also it is said that sport participants are better in

academic performance than the students that are not athletes.

Indeed, the benefits of sports to students’ physical and mental health can never be

denied. It is in this content that the researchers are motivated to conduct this study which

focused on determining the relationship between sports participation and students’

development of students in Special Program for Sports (SPS) in Kananga National High

School, Leyte Division for the school year 2022-2023.

The findings of the study were used as a basis in formulating a framework to

strengthen Special Program for Sports (SPS) in Kananga National High School.

The focus of the study is to take initiatives aim to engage youth in sport to keep them

away from harm, while others use sport to provide psycho-social support for children

traumatized by war, disaster or exploitation. Still others use sport to engage youth and

stimulate positive development of values, attitudes, and behavior. It also aims to know how

sports affect students’ development.

The respondents of the study are the students of Kananga National High School who

are engage in sports. Because There’s a common perception that devoting curriculum time to

sport and physical activity will negatively impact students’ academic performance; taking

away time from ‘important’ subjects. However, research demonstrates that participation in

sport and physical activity, both inside and outside the classroom, positively impacts

students’ academic performance and efficiency.

The study was conducted limitedly at Kananga National High School. Frequent

participation in sport and physical activity at a young age encourages positive cognitive

development in youth – developing and learning to use the core skills of the brain to think,

read, learn, remember, reason and problem solve.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Problem

The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sports

participation and students’ development of students in Special Program for Sports (SPS) in

Kananga National High School, Leyte Division for the school year 2022-2023.

Specific Problem

1. Do you support the SPS Program of KNHS?

2. How does SPS Program help the students of KNHS?

3. Is it possible for a student in SPS to excel in Sports as well as in other fields?

7

4. Is there a significant relationship between students’ development and their

participation towards sports?

5. How does sports affect student development?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The research objective is to determine the following:

If the students support the SPS Program of Kananga National High School.

How the SPS Program help the students of Kananga National High School.

If it’s possible for a students’ in SPS to excel in other fields.

If there is a significant relationship between participating in sports and the students’

development.

How sports affect the students’ development.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study to the students are the athletic training and academic

study are interrelated. Sports in education are an integral part of the curriculum. It helps to

shape a person’s personality and contributes to their holistic development. Students are given

the opportunity to be a leader as they mature. This helps them become confident and able to

make decisive and informed decisions. These skills can be improved through sports, which

require that decisions are made and communicated to the other members of the team

frequently for the greater good When hiring new employees, businesses are looking for

people who can work in a team environment. As they move up the corporate ladder, their

leadership experience will be more important.

The significance of this study to the teacher is because, in sports activities, teachers

have to play the role of leader. Knowing that they have to lead the team will boost their

leadership qualities and this helps them to become good decision-makers. Being a leader,
8

their duty is not just to lead the team but also need to boost and appreciate the team. every

sportsperson is encouraged by their teacher for achieving success his positive mentoring will

also help students in other phases of their life. Students will learn to perform better and

achieve success in their life. positive mentoring also allows students to develop a positive

mindset.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This section presents the review of related literature and studies which have bearing to

the present study. These are cited to serve as background for the present study.

A. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Research shows that student-athlete academic support programs are vitally important

for the success of student-athletes entering Division-I institutions (Farrel, 2007). The

literature review was divided into several sections: Academic Support Services, Relationship

Between the Athlete and Academic Support, Role of the Student athletes, Subculture of

Student-Athletes, and Gender Domination Between the Student athletes. This study seeks to

understand the organizational culture and the process of academic support services and how

they affect Division-I athletic programs in graduating student-athletes. Understanding past

research involving academic support and student athletes is essential in carrying out this

study. Furthermore, both positive and negative impacts must be considered when examining

the relationship between academics and collegiate student-athletes. This literature review will

ultimately reveal the concerns that supported the literature’s purpose and offers justification

of the need for this review. One of the most adopted approaches for providing academic

support for students in higher education has been the implementation of Learning

Enhancement Centers. Not only are these centers beneficial for student success, but they are

now used to provide faculty development services as well (Arendale, 2004). These centers

provide anything from academic support programs for students to requested feedback from

professors and publishing teaching effectiveness newsletters for faculty (Arendale, 2004).

The learning that can take place by both faculty and students is one example of what an

institution of higher education can provide for all its learners. Even students who enroll in

distance learning programs expect learning support services to be provided via distance

technology (Arandale, 2004).

13

B. REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

When compared to previous years, it is arguable that today’s student-athletes face

greater challenges athletically and academically. Student-athletes face the same issues that

concern their college-age peers such as developing personal competencies, solidifying their

individual identities, learning how to nurture relationships, establishing beliefs and behaviors

consistent with emerging values and standards, and choosing a career path and setting career

goals However, unlike students in the general population, student-athletes must deal with the

pressures that are inherent in competitive athletics Research suggests that student-athletes

were subject to greater stresses in their academic careers than the general student body. The

stress factors occurring with the student-athletes were coming from the demands placed on

them by coaches and institutions, and the obligations to train, travel, and perform. In addition,

expectations and challenges correlated with developing winning programs have a huge

impact on the college athletic programs and on the student-athlete There were three areas

where a student-athlete dealt with individual challenges: personal, academic, and athletic. In

order to address these issues, athletic departments incorporated systems that emphasize

academic development of the student-athletes, and these systems also had an impact on the

personal development of the student-athlete. Athletic development remained in the purview

of the coach. The student-athletes were carefully monitored as they progressed through

general academic advising, tutoring, and a structured study hall.

CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes methods used in the study such as research design, research

respondents, research instrument, research locale, and statistical treatment of the data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research design according to methods that the authors use in conducting the study

is a Descriptive, it is non-experimental research. And, according to techniques it is a

quantitative and qualitative but focuses more in qualitative research. Also, it is basic research,

according to its purpose.

Descriptive because it aims to accurately and systematically describe a population,

phenomenon or situation about how sports differently affect the students’ academic

performance and the students’ development.

Quantitative and Qualitative because the study deals with numbers and statistics of

how many students choose what’s the best answer for the survey questionnaire. And also, it

deals with words and meanings, because survey questionnaire aims to know the perception of

students towards sports.

It is basic research because it is a systematic study that is directed towards

understanding of the fundamental aspects of situations and observable facts. It also aims to

improve theories for better understanding and prediction of natural or other phenomena

without specific applications towards processes or products in mind. Because it involves

understanding students on how sports affect the students’ development.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The research respondents of the study are the SPS students and other random student-

athletes in Kananga National High School. Specifically, the researchers just choose 8 sample
15

students in each grade level of SPS and 8 other students that are athletes in the regular

section, a total of 40 respondents in Kananga National High School.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The research tools that are used in the study is Questionnaire. It is a systematic

compilation of question that are submitted to a sampling of population from which

information’s desired. It refers to a device for securing answers to question by using a form

which the respondents fill in himself. The researchers gathered the data through survey by

using the survey questionnaire.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study is conducted inside the campus of Kananga National High School, it is

located at Real St., Kananga, Leyte. The survey was conducted inside the classroom, namely

SPS-7, SPS-8, SPS-9, SPS-10 and Capricorn-10. And the research paper is encoded at the
